Folios 193-205. Letter from Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, concerning the sale of copyhold parish property at Bramfield, and enclosing charitable accounts from the Town Book and parish disbursements, with the intention of proving continued parish responsibility for the town house and land and that the trustees were nominal parties only. [quoted 'Jackson v Hiley 10 Barnwell and Cresswell fo 885'] The sale, subject to rent charge, would be to Mr Tatlock, the present tenant. The deeds of the property, if there were any, were in the possession of the Reverend Reginald Rabett, one of the surviving trustees, who would be unlikely to release them. He enclosed: 1 A completed sale of property form 'to be transmitted to the Poor Law Commissioners when the enquiries and requisitions are satisfied and complied with'. Trustees admitted to the property in 1821 were here recorded as: Samuel Badeley of Norwich [Norfolk], gentleman; John Showger of Bramfield, gentleman; Reginald Rabett, son of Reginald Rabett, late of Bramfield; Ralph Nelson Rabett son of John Rabett of Carlton, gentleman; Joseph Badeley of Bramfield; Robert Haward the younger, farmer of Bramfield; [John Fella the younger], farmer of Bramfield; With the exception of the Reverend Reginald Rabett, all surviving trustees would agree to the sale; The signature of [John Cra---] Steward of the Manor was obtained; 2 The disbursements of William Girling and Stephen Capon, Bramfield churchwardens, Michaelmas 1812 to Easter 1815 which included payments to: Sherington; Samuel Ward; James Godbold; James Skoulding; William Eastaugh; John Wright; Robert Smith; William Crisp; Mr Badeley; Henry Wright; Mr Haward; 3 The receipts and disbursements of the Churchwardens for the year ending Easter 1830 naming: Reverend C Mason; Aldred, carpenter; Wright, blacksmith; Hatcher, blacksmith; [Rampley], wine merchant; Easthaugh, bricklayer; Moore, bricklayer; Feathers, glazier; Wright, brick; Henry Lock, sexton; Ringwood, lime; Mr Markham; Mr Haward; Reverend Joseph Badeley; James Mayhew; N Gooda [Nathaniel Gooda of Bramfield]; S Reynolds; R Fieldbank; R Andrews; J Archer; Blomfield; William Aldis Higham [Heigham]; S Cross; B Balls; W Ling; James Aldis; S Capon; T Jarman; R Edments; Paul Tatlock; Samuel Cross; 4 The account of charities as appears in the terrier of Bramfield, 16 May 1829, which included the following: An almshouse for eight poor widows or aged persons, the gift of Thomas Neale [Thomas Neal], now in the occupation of: Ann Scoulding, widow; Widow Reeve; Widow Hawes; Widow Stigal; Widow Harvey; Widow Churchyard; Widow Gilman; Susan Hammond; the estate of Sarah Bedingfield, widow, and now of Robert Haward; A tenement in Metfield abutting Withersdale and the highway from Halesworth to Harleston. The following were listed as occupiers, benefactors or abutting landowners: Widow Gower; Sir John Henniker. William Moore; Mr Read; Anthony Freston; Thomas Kent; Mary Neale [Neal]; Thomas Neale [Neal]; Elizabeth Archer, spinster, deceased; One messuage and two acres of land. The following were listed as occupiers or abutting landowners: James Andrews; Joseph Badeley; Robert Fieldbank; Thomas Edwards; Mary Badeley, widow; Joseph Badeley; Henry Wright; 5. A committee appointed by the parishioners of Bramfield in vestry met on 13 March 1837 to investigate the state of the charities. Some had not been applied to their legitimate purposes. The Reverend Joseph Badeley had refused to allow the committee to investigate accounts, stating that only the feoffees should have access; The following were listed as benefactors or occupiers: Robert Haward; Widow of Thomas Neal [Thomas Neale]; Elizabeth Archer; Thomas Kent; The following signed the committee report: Thomas Page; Robert Appleton; W A Higham [William Aldis Higham] [Heighem]; W G Edwards; James King; The parishioners in vestry assembled at Bramfield on 4 April 1837. It was agreed that if the Reverend Joseph Badeley did not pay what he owed, proceedings would be taken against him. Thomas Page, Chairman; 6. The following were listed as churchwardens, overseers, witnesses or tenants: 11 April 1748: Reginald Rabett, Churchwarden; John Taylor, Churchwarden; Henry Tillett, tenant; John Tillett; Thomas Elgood, witness; Benjamin Cook, witness; Henry Tillett was to leave his house at an hour's warning if smallpox should break out in Bramfield; 18 June 1760: Robert Heigham [Higham], Churchwarden; Lawrence Artis, Churchwarden; Robert Robinson, overseer; Roger Reynolds, overseer; Henry Tillett, bricklayer; Reginald Rabett; John Woolnough, witness; James Andrews, witness; Samuel Higham [Heigham], witness; William Todd, witness; 20 April 1778: Nathaniel Briggs, Churchwarden; [James Fella], Churchwarden; Henry Tillett, tenant; [Reynolds], witness; 12 October 1801: Joseph Badeley; Easter Monday, 1829: Mr Mayhew, Churchwarden; William Aldis Higham [Heigham], Churchwarden; Paul Tatlock; 1 October 1829: James Mayhew; William Aldis Higham [Heigham]; Paul Tatlock.
