Folio 52-55: Account of remittent fever that occurred on board. The number of cases were very small due to the ship's location being two miles of the coast and the infected military personal being segregated immediately from the naval personal on board. On Folio 53 a case study and post mortem report is included of 'William H Blake of 40, Captain Royal Navy, HMS David, Commanding Officer of Naval Brigade, Praksee, Gold Coast'. The surgeon notes that the death of this officer, and officers in general, could have been prevented if they had had reported their ailments earlier. He states that the officers are unwilling to resign their appointments; concealing their ailments, for fear of forfeiting a chance of earning distinction, or losing liberal pecuniary rewards.
Folio 54: The surgeon remarked that the black troops (West Indian) and Kroomen (who acted as carriers) were though of Africian blood, proportionally affected by sickness as much as their white allies from fever. They were comparatively exempt from dysentery but pneumonia prevailed very much amongst them.
Folio 63-64A: A letter written to the commanding officer of HMS 'Victor Emanuel' written by R C Pasley Lawrenson, of the HMS Emanuel regarding the sanitary matters on the Gold Coast. Letter relates to the unsanitary state of steamers on the Gold Coast that may harbour yellow fever and then lists sanitary measures to be taken to improve the situation.
Folio 64A: A list of suggestions on improving the construction of the 'Victor Emanuel' as a Hospital Ship. Signed by the staff surgeon 2nd Class, R C Pasley Lawrenson.
