Description

Folio 1: Printed instructions on completing nosological tables, recording where a patient was taken ill, dividing the General Remarks into three sections relating to the ship and crew, her movements and places visited and a consideration of the diseases.

Folios 2-3: case no 1, John Lancaster, aged 38, Sergeant Royal Marine; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, ulcer, inflammation of the middle third of the left leg, surrounding of an abrasion of the skin over the tibia received accidentally; put on sick list, 8 December 1873, brought forwards for survey 16 January 1874 afterwards invalided.

Folios 3-4: case no 2, John Wheatley, aged 21, Private Marine; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 21 December 1873, brought forwards for survey 1 January 1874 afterwards invalided.

Folio 4: case no 3, Mr Charles Barch, aged 45, Gunner; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, debility after fever, was received on board this ship from the 'Active', was employed in the camp at Dunguah, he enjoyed fair health until embarked on the 'Active', on which he was afterwards attacked with febrile remittent, for which he was treated by Dr Fegan; put on sick list, 27 December 1873, brought forwards for survey 1 January 1874 afterwards invalided.

Folios 4-5: case no 4, William Bennett, aged 17, Boy; taken ill at Addafoah [Ada Foah] on the Volta; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 5 January 1874, brought forwards for survey 1 January 1874 afterwards invalided, discharged to the 'Dromedary' for passage to England.

Folios 5-6: case no 5, Albert Annies, aged 35, Stoker; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febricula followed by debility; put on sick list, 27 December 1873, discharged 9 January 1874 to light duty, re-admitted into sick list on 11 January at [Jella Coffee?], complained of weakness and giddiness and occasional attack of syncope, afterwards invalided on 16 January 1874, sent 17 January 1874 to the 'Dromedary' for passage to England.

Folios 6-7: case no 6, Mr George Vincent, aged 40, Boatswain; taken ill at [Jella Coffee?]; sick or hurt, febris; put on sick list, 12 January 1874, brought forwards for survey 16 January 1874 afterwards invalided, sent 17 January 1874 to the 'Dromedary' for passage to England.

Folios 7-8: case no 7, James Roberts, aged 27, 2nd Captain Quarter Deck; taken ill at Addafoah [Ada Foah]; sick or hurt, febris; put on sick list, 28 January 1874, brought forwards for survey 14 January 1874 afterwards invalided, sent 17 January 1874 to the 'Nebraska' for passage to England.

Folios 8-9: case no 8, John Judge, aged 28, Gunner Royal Marine Artillery; taken ill at Addafoah [Ada Foah]; sick or hurt, debility after fever; put on sick list, 13 January 1874, brought forwards for survey 14 January 1874 afterwards invalided, sent 17 January 1874 to the 'Nebraska' for passage to England.

Folios 9-10: case no 9, Thomas Crooker, aged 32, Ward Room Steward; taken ill at [Eli?a Chigua?]; sick or hurt, orchitis (rheumatic), affecting left testicle; put on sick list, 9 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 10: case no 10, Mr Hugh Evans, aged 21, Sub Lieutenant; was received from HMS Decoy (on her return from Cape Coast Castle to [Eli?a Chigua?]); sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 10 February 1874, invalided 14 February 1874, sent 16 February 1874 to the 'Dromedary' for passage to England.

Folios 10-11: case no 11, Joseph Smith, aged 21, Private Marine; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, eczema, debility and extensive eruptions on the front and side of the right leg and thigh; put on sick list, 13 February 1874, invalided 14 February 1874, sent 17 February 1874 to the 'Nebraska' for passage to England.

Folio 11: case no 12, Mr Edwin Ashworth, aged 42, Chief Engineer; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, debility; put on sick list, 13 February 1874, invalided 14 February 1874, sent 17 February 1874 to the 'Nebraska' for passage to England.

Folios 11-12: case no 13, Henry Fanton, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, otorrhea, complained of pain in the left ear, the Surgeon stated that this patient's appearance, and several circumstances combined, led him to conclude that this patient was of weak intellect. According to the Surgeon he considered his duty to prevent this patient being flogged for apparent impertinence to the Captain by smiling when the Captain was reading a warrant sentencing this patient to confinement in the cell; put on sick list, 13 February 1874, invalided 14 February 1874, sent 17 February 1874 to the 'Nebraska' for passage to England.

Folio 12: case no 14, Mr Frederick A Cook, aged 23, Assistant Engineer; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris; put on sick list, 16 February 1874, sent 9 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folios 12-15: case nos 15 and 16, Henry T Harvey, aged 30, Captain of the Hold; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris remittent and dysentery [case no 16]; put on sick list, 16 February 1874, discharged 24 April 1874 to light duty.

Folios 15-16: case no 17, Arthur Oakley, aged 22, Able Seaman; was received from the Nebraska at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris and pemphigus, he was sent with the Naval Brigade at Coomassie, and was on the sick list of the expedition from 7 to 18 February suffered from remittent fever, complained of weakness and want of appetite and presents an extensive eruption of pemphigus on the trunk and lower extremities; put on sick list, 20 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, on 15 March, received on board prior to the ship leaving, the eruption all but disappeared complained only debility, discharged 18 March 1874 to light duty.

Folio 16: case no 18, William Luxford, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, debility after fever; put on sick list, 20 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 17: case no 19, William Parker, aged 23, Private Marine; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 20 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folios 17-18: case no 20, Joshua Short, aged 27, Shipwright; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 21 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folio 18: case nos 21 and 22, Richard Watkins, aged 37, Leading Stoker; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, tumour of right thigh, of a small orange and of cartilagenous hardness; put on sick list, 23 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, on 15 March returned to the ship, no apparent change in the circumstances, had a boil on the left leg, sent 27 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folios 19-21: case nos 23 and 24, William Dustin, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, palpitation; put on sick list, 24 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension, on 15 March returned to the ship, still suffered from cardiac pain and phthisis, sent 27 April 1874 to Hospital at Plymouth.

Folio 21: case no 25, Charles Cassidy, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; taken ill at Cape Coast; sick or hurt, febris remittent; put on sick list, 25 February 1874, sent 5 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.

Folios 21-22: case no 26, John Terrell, aged 36, Leading Stoker; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris; put on sick list, 2 March 1874, sent 6 March 1874 to Hospital at Ascension.
