Note in margin that, in the surgeon’s opinion, the ulcer is caused by the febrile state of the system when a scratch or contusion is inflicted.

Folios 11-13: Patrick Sheane, Seaman, aged 40; disease or hurt, pneumonia and gastritis. Taken ill, 13 April 1813. Discharged to hospital, 30 April 1813. Was only discharged from sick list the day before for venereal complaint. Comments that this patient was bled of 130 ounces of blood in the first 3 days of treatment, though it was difficult to persuade him to lose more on the 16th, and that blood letting and purgatives are proved to be the best way to lessen fevers.
