Description

Folio 1: Joined this ship 25 March in Douarnenez Bay and found her sick list contained 57 cases in all. Pneumonia 8, one died on board, 7 sent to duty Anasarca 1, sent to the hospital, 30 April; Catarrh 2, sent to duty; Asthmatic 1, sent to duty; Accidents 3, sent to duty; Venereals 29, sent to duty; Ulcers 10, four very extensive and four sent to hospital next day; Rheumatism 2, sent to duty; Debility 1, sent to duty.

Folios 1-3: John McLean, Seaman, aged 55; disease or hurt, Pneumonic Inflammation. Taken ill, 25 March 1813. Died 17 April 1813. Gives opinion that he died from a disease of the heart or stomach rather than pneumonia. McLean been drunk constantly for 10 days and had in his possession a bill for gin, rum etc amounting to £16. Observes that ‘drunkenness nowadays in the Navy kills more men than the sword’ and that most diseases and accidents can be attributed to grog.

Folio 4: Richard [Dury], Seaman; disease or hurt, bubo, chancre etc. Taken ill, 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty, 24 April 1813. Folio 4: Daniel Flynn, Seaman; disease or hurt, debility. Taken ill, 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty, 26 March 1813. Folio 4: Richard King, Seaman, aged 54; disease or hurt, asthmatic. Taken ill, 25 March 1813 but had been on sick list for 10 days. Discharged to duty, 27 March 1813.

Folios 4-6: Samuel Manning, Private Marine, aged 33; disease or hurt, anasarca. Taken ill, 25 March 1813. Discharged to hospital, 30 April 1813. With observations on the wind direction and strength in the margin.

Folio 6: Luke Colgan, Seaman, aged 30; disease or hurt, an extensive ulcer on the right leg about the size of the palm of a mans hand, clean, but the tibia denuded about two inches in length. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813 but had been on sick list for 10 days. Discharged to the Boyne for passage to Portsmouth Hospital, 26 March 1813. Folio 6: Thomas Lambert, Seaman, aged 24; disease or hurt, an extensive ulcer on the right leg. Found on the sick list 28 February 1813. Discharged to the Boyne for passage to Portsmouth Hospital, 26 March 1813. Folio 6: Henry Willey, Private Marine, aged 20; disease or hurt, ulcer on the right leg, the bone denuded. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813. Discharged to the Boyne for passage to Portsmouth Hospital, 26 March 1813. Folio 6: William Dready, Seaman, aged 24; disease or hurt, an extensive sphacelus. Found on the sick list 25 March. Discharged to the Boyne for passage to Portsmouth Hospital, 26 March.

Folio 7: James Torrington, Seaman, aged 45; disease or hurt, a sloughing ulcer on 2 fingers. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty 19 April 1813. Folio 7: Patrick Morgan, Seaman, aged 51; disease or hurt, a foul ulcer on the left knee and several smaller ulcers on his leg, pneumonia and attacks of cholera [morbus]. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty 30 May 1813. ‘A hard drinking worthless fellow’. Folio 7: Jon [Flale], Private Marine, aged 35; disease or hurt, a foul sanious ulcer on toe with fungus and 2 smaller fetid ulcers. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813, had been on list 3 months. Discharged to duty 25 April 1813. Folio 7: James Cox, Boy, aged 15: disease or hurt, ulcer on the right tibia, foul and bleeding. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813, had been on list for 10 months. Discharged to duty 14 June 1813. Folio 7: Thomas [Claystal], Marine; disease or hurt, ulcers form abrasion on hand. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty 3 April 1813. Folio 7: Daniel Dillon, Seaman; disease or hurt, sprained belly. Found on the sick list 25 March 1813. Discharged to duty 4 April 1813. Folio 7: Samuel Warren, Marine; disease or hurt, sprained leg.
