Description

Folio 32: John Foelay, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, pain in his back and limbs, tongue foul, complaints preceded by a shivering. Taken ill, 22 April 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 30 April 1799. Folio 32: Andrew Cowman, aged 24, Landsman; disease or hurt, large ulcer over the middle of the spine of the tibia of the right leg, the same part has been ulcerated frequently. Taken ill, 28 April 1799, Proscita [Procida]. Discharged to duty, 10 June 1799. Note alongside that 5 more cases of ulcers have been added to the list.

Folio 33: Thomas Thorpe, aged 36, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his back and limbs, pulse 108 irregular, tongue foul, costive. Taken ill, 1 May 1799, Proscita [Procida]. Remained on sick list until close of journal, 9 July 1799. Note alongside that the fever abated within 48 hours but was followed by an inflammation of his [left] leg and foot. Abscesses followed and were healed except for one very large one which discharged so much that his leg was endangered. Folio 33: John Jones, aged 25, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, intermittent fever, headache and costiveness. Taken ill, 10 May 1799, Proscita [Procida]. Discharged to duty, 20 May 1799.

Folio 34: James Price, aged 28, Private Marine; disease or hurt, headache, sore throat, pain in his back and limbs, pulse very quick and hard. Taken ill, 14 May 1799, Proscita [Procida], but first became ill at the garrison of Ischia. Discharged to duty, 6 July 1799. Sixteen ounces of blood were taken from him and a further sixteen the following day and a large blister applied between his shoulders. Delirium came on very rapidly. He had been ill some time before reporting.

Folio 35: William Cotterel, aged 24, Private Marine; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his back and limbs, sore throat, uvula and amygdala much swelled, deglutition difficult. Taken ill, 19 May 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 28 May 1799. Folio 35: Owen Williams, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, flux, violent griping pains in his bowels etc. Taken ill, 25 May 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 2 June 1799.

Folio 36: John Blair, aged 28, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, fracture of the os nasi and maxilla superior of the left cheek, with a large lacerated wound, from a block falling on him. Taken ill, 31 May 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 5 July 1799. Folio 36: John Swan, aged 28, Carpenter’s Crew; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in his stomach and bowels, violent purging. Taken ill, 5 June 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 12 June 1799. Folio 36: Hugh Berklay, aged 30, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in his back and limbs, seized with shivering about 4am. Taken ill, 6 June 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 10 June 1799. Folio 36: Thomas Ryan, aged 26, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, swelled testicle and enlargement of the epidydimus and spermatic chord of the right side from a violent contusion. Taken ill, 10 June 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 7 July 1799.

Folio 37: Robert Spence, aged 32, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, violent griping pains in his bowels, frequent purging, stools slimy and small in quantity. Taken ill, 15 June 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 20 June 1799. Folio 37: Note alongside Robert Spence that one or two with the flux are added to the sick list every day. Cases are violent at first but respond to medicine. Folio 37: Charles Trick, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in his back and limbs, sore throat. Taken ill, 19 June 1799, Palermo. Discharged to duty, 26 June 1799. Folio 37: Thomas Haynes, aged 29, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, large abscess on the left leg just above the ankle, from a contusion which he neglected. Taken ill, 22 June 1799, Palermo. No date of discharge recorded, journal ends 9 July. Folio 37: James [Vogan], aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his stomach and bowels, nausea, frequently goes to stool without relief. Taken ill, 28 June 1799, at sea. Discharged to duty, 7 July 1799. Folio 37: Note alongside James [Vogan] that four or five dysentery cases are added to the list every day, symptoms more violent than previously.

Folio 38: Peter Malcolm, aged 32, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, opthalmia, both eyes much inflamed and very painful, received no injury that he knows of. Taken ill, 2 July 1799, Naples. No date of discharge recorded, journal ends 9 July 1799. Folio 38: Joseph [Sapiria], aged 25, Landsman; disease or hurt, headache, violent stitch in his side, great difficulty breathing, pulse strong and quick. Taken ill, 4 July 1799, Naples. No date of discharge recorded, journal ends 9 July 1799. Folio 38: William Kelly, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent vomiting and purging with spasms in the abdominal muscles and in those of his arms and legs. Taken ill, 7 July 1799, Naples. No date of discharge recorded, journal ends 9 July.

Folio 38: Abstract of all the cases contained in the preceding journal. Continued fevers, 28, of which 1 remains under cure; Fluxes, 30, of which, 1 died on board, and 1 remains under cure; Ulcers, 7; Wounds and accidents, 20, of which,1 was sent to the hospital, and 2 died on board; Pulmonic inflammation, 19, of which 1 remains under cure; Intermittent fevers, 7; Dropsy, 1, sent to the hospital; Gravel, 2, of which 2 were sent to the hospital; Jaundice, 3; Opthalmia, 2, of which 1 remains under cure; Abscess, 3; Lues venerea, 1.
