Folio 3: William Herman, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, violent headache, great pain in his back and loins, tongue foul, pulse 100, no stool for two days. Taken ill, 9 July 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 17 July 1798. Folio 3: Note in remarks column regarding cases of ulcers and fevers in the last two months. Folio 3: Nathaniel English, aged 23, Carpenter’s Crew; disease or hurt, small ulcer on the outside of the left leg, a little above the ankle, inflamed around the edges, from an accident a few days earlier. Taken ill, 11 July 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 25 August 1798. Folio 3: William Wilson, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, great pain about the [tonsiform] cartilage, difficulty breathing. Taken ill, 14 July 1798. Discharged to duty, 10 August 1798.
Folio 4: Abraham Watty, aged 42, Private Marine; disease or hurt, great pain in the lower part of his belly, also a pain darting from the right side of the lumbar vertebra to the groin, has twice been attacked by shivering and is subject to the gravel. Taken ill, 18 July 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 30 July 1798. Note in remarks column that he had every symptom of a stone passing the ureter. His fits returned so frequently that he was eventually discharged to sick quarters. Folio 4: John Broadhurst, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, violent vomiting and purging, great pain in his bowels. Taken ill, 22 July 1798, Syracuse Harbour. Discharged to duty, 26 July 1798. Folio 4: Jacob Forbrand, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, ulcer over the spine of the tibia of the right leg, from a small contused wound, much inflamed. Taken ill, 25 July 1798, Syracuse Harbour. Discharged to duty, 20 August 1798. Folio 4: Thomas Wells, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his bowels, frequent inclinations to stool, stools slimy and small in quantity. Taken ill, 27 July 1798, Syracuse Harbour. Discharged to duty, 20 August 1798.
Folio 5: John Finnesay, aged 14, Boy 2nd Class; disease or hurt, the parietal bone of the left side fractured and depressed by a splinter during an engagement with the French fleet. Taken ill, 2 August 1798, Becquier Bay [Aboukir Bay]. Discharged to duty, 14 October 1798. The depressed part of the bone was removed ‘by the trephine’ which was applied twice. The engagement with the French fleet referred to is the Battle of the Nile. Folio 5: Robert Trevavers [or Trefsize], aged 26, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, right leg carried away close to the groin. Taken ill, 2 August 1798, Becquier Bay [Aboukir Bay]. Died 4 August 1798. The leg was shot away so close to the groin it was difficult to apply a tourniquet. He died when he tore away the dressing and caused haemorrhaging while the sentry was busy. Folio 5: Thomas Martin, aged 42, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, the bones of his right arm fractured in four places by a splinter. Taken ill, 2 August 1798, Becquier Bay [Aboukir Bay]. Discharged to duty, 18 October 1798. Folio 5: Note alongside Thomas Martin that about twenty other cases were also added to the sick list with contused wounds, some of them large and severe. Folio 5: Thomas Jones, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, intermittent fever, paroxysms came on about 4pm the previous day, headache. Taken ill, 3 August 1798, Becquier Bay [Aboukir Bay]. Discharged to duty, 7 August 1798.
Folio 6: Robert Lane, aged 29, Carpenter’s Crew; disease or hurt, headache, great pain in the bowels, purging etc., tongue foul. Taken ill, 8 August 1798, Becquier Bay [Aboukir Bay]. Discharged to duty, 12 August 1798. Folio 6: Note alongside treatment of John Finnesay that all other men wounded are doing well, even those with head wounds who had alarming symptoms such as vertigo and vomiting. Folio 6: George Galas, aged 32, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, ulcer, nearly the size of a crown, on the fore part of the right leg, from a contused wound, much inflammation. Taken ill, 14 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 16 September 1798. Folio 6: John Ivers, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his bowels, purging etc., stools slimy and small in quantity. Taken ill, 14 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 17 August 1798. Folio 6: Francis Raynous [Renuge], aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, great pain in his breast, troublesome cough, pulse full and quick. Taken ill, 15 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 23 August 1798. Folio 6: Peter Graham, aged 25, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, griping pains in his bowels, frequent slimy, small stools. Taken ill, 16 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to 20 August 1798. Folio 6: Note alongside Peter Graham that there have been a considerable number of dysentery cases, mostly slight, some with headache and other febrile symptoms. Also some catarrh and pulmonic inflammation. Folio 6: Hugh Williams, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, pain in his side, difficulty in breathing, pulse strong and quick, complains of a troublesome, tickling cough. Taken ill, 17 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 15 September 1798.
Folio 7: James McDonald, aged 36, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, vomiting and purging, strong spasms of the abdominal muscles. Taken ill, 18 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 4 September 1798. Note alongside that two clysters had to be given before a stool was procured or any relief of the pain. The case terminated in a dysentery. Folio 7: John Lewis, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, cough, pain in his loins etc, headache came on with cold shivering about 4am. Discharged to duty, 12 September 1798. Folio 7: Thomas Bailay, aged 25, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, cough, pain in his side, difficulty in breathing etc. Taken ill, 19 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 26 August 1798. Folio 7: Note alongside Thomas Bailay that there were eight more similar cases that day. Folio 7: John McMillan, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, pain in his loins, cough, sore throat. Taken ill, 21 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 27 August 1798. Folio 7: Note alongside that five or six more catarrhal cases and one or two with dysentery are added to the list each day. Attributed to dampness in the atmosphere and in the ship from a leak. Folio 7: Martin Norway, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, cough, great pain in his breast and oppression in his breathing. Taken ill, 23 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 30 August 1798.
Folio 8: John White, aged 22, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, pain in his back and loins, tongue foul, no stool for two days, was seized with shaking for half an hour the night before. Taken ill, 24 August 1798, at sea. Discharged to duty, 2 September 1798.
