Folios 34-37: Surgeon's general remarks. The President anchored in Esquimalt Harbour Vancouver Island on 3 October 1854, on 16 October the ship sailed to San Francesco Bay and arrived on 29 October. On 3 December the ship left San Francesco and arrived in Valparaiso on the 21 January 1855 she remained there till 26 February, and sailed and anchored in Callao Bay on 6 March. From here the ship sailed on the 10 March and anchored off the reef of Honolulu, Sandwich Island on the 10 of April, from the Sandwich Island the ship sailed on the 18 April and anchored off Petropanlowski in the Bay of Awatska, Kamschatka on the 30 May at this place the ship remained up to 20 June. During the ship stay the ship’s company were employed destroying the fortifications and munitions of war of the place. From 20 June the ship sailed eastward and came off the port of Litka in Russian American on the 9 July, and had communicated with the Russian authorities of that place, she arrived at San Francesco on 26 July and stayed at this place until 19 September on which day the ship left and anchored in Esquimalt Harbour on the 29 September where the ship remained. According to the Surgeon, there were 33 cases remaining on sick list at the closing of last account, of these 18 were the subjects of gunshot wounds resulted from the attacked of Petropanlowski on 4 September 1854. Of the 33 cases 5 were invalided; 1. Robert Strudwack, aged 20, Private Marine; for palpitation [case 598]. 2. Samuel Berry, aged 30, Leading Seaman; for wounded caused by round shot [case 658]. 3. William Glasscock, aged 25, Private Marine; for gunshot wound [case 681]. 4. Edward Stallard, aged 25, Private Marine; for gunshot wound [case 684]. 5. John Delaney, aged 49, Bandsman; for hemorrhois and general debility [case 703]. He also made further remarks on cases mentioned in the journal – John Sparks [case no. 37], a marine [case no. 9], John McKellon [case no. 57], James Olivers [case no. 136], William Bellow [case 151], James Whithers [case no.146], John Hennessey [case no. 203], Edward Barnes [case no. 221], a caulker [case no. 241], John Sheerin [case no. 245], a case of acute rheumatism [case no. 252], Edward Spencer [case no. 197], William Graham [case no. 76], Silas Martin [case no. 199], Joseph Hill [case no. 280], Mr A L Nugent [case no. 294], Charles Ford [case no. 267], Robert Sansom [case no 345], George Prince, John Knight and Lieutenant Thomas. The Surgeon mentions that previous to the President visiting Callao in 1854 an epidemic has raged in that place and Lima, which had all the characters of yellow fever. Signed: James J. L.
