Description

Folio 15: case no. 16, John Fulford, aged 27, Lieutenant, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, delirium tremers and concussio, had been drinking hard the previous evening, irritability of stomach very great, constant vomiting and retching. He was seized with a fit of congestive apoplexy, which led him to fall and struck his head across the chain cable immediately over the right parietal bone; put on sick list 26 February 1846, sent 26 February 1846 to Hospital.

Folio 15: case no. 17, George [Thystle?], aged 24, Able Seaman, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, fractura of ulna with severe contusions, while the ship got under weigh for Algoa Bay with Governor & [?], an accident happened to this man, by the running out furiously through the horsehole a howser of a large calibre and the end of which struck him across the anterior part of the thighs below the superior anterior processes of ilium, produced instantly violent contusion; put on sick list 1 April 1846, sent 26 February 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 16: case no. 18, J. J. Roberts, aged 35, Assistant Surgeon, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, acute rheumatis., acute pain of the wrist and fingers of right arm more during the night time, was subject to repeated attacks of acute rheumatism previously; put on sick list 5 April 1846, sent 13 April 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 17: case no. 19, Elias Eaton, aged 33, Able Seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, phthisis incipiens, had a cough for some days standing with pain of right chest little to the right of ensiform cartilage; put on sick list 6 April 1846, sent 13 April 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 17: case no. 20, George Curtis, aged 26, Able Seaman Supernumerary. of HMS Helena, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, hepatitis, he was 6 weeks ago discharged from the Naval Hospital, where he was sent with hepatitis, on his way on board from the Hospital it came on to rain and he got wet which might explain the recurrence of the present symptoms, viz pain of the right side extended from below the false ribs upwards to the shoulder; put on sick list 16 May 1846, sent 21 May 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 18: case no. 21, John Frazer (2), aged 29, Able Seaman, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, necrosis, was put on list with a large whitlow of middle finger of right hand, which was open and a large collection of matter deeply seated was discharged with an offensive effluvial. He received a blow from a fellow shipmate upon the finger by accident; put on sick list 25 April 1846, sent 25 May 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 18: case no. 22, Thomas Caswell, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, fractura of tibia, while employed at this Dock Yard, in receiving heavy stones and c, and while in the act of towing on a sandy beach during which the surf was high that it accidentally threw the spar upon the man and before he could extricate himself from the impending weight, the water receding and the spar fell heavy upon the right leg fracturing it upper third over the tibia; put on sick list 8 June 1846, sent 8 June 1846 to Naval Hospital.

Folio 19: case no. 23, Richard Brokenshaw, aged 40, Able Seaman, taken ill at Simon's Bay; sick or hurt, hernia, swelling of left groin in the site of left external ring, on examined him found that a rupture occurred, he stated that it appeared about three to four weeks ago while he was employ at the Dock Yard in the acted of lifting a heavy spar; suddenly a falling of sickness was experienced but did not know the nature or extent of the injury, but casually mentioned the circumstance to a messmate who was sent for to corroborate the statement before the signing officers of the Ccertificate and who was to advise the man to go to the surgeon at the time it happened; put on sick list 21 June 1846, no date of discharge mentioned.

Folio 19: case no. 24, copy of letter signed by James Jackson Assistant Surgeon in charge of Detachment of the 57th Regt. on board (Mary Ann Frigate Ship), William H. B. Jones M.D. surgeon of HMS President and [?] surgeon of HMS Snake. Referred to Richard Dacres Rear Admiral of the White and Commander in Chief, in the letter date 3rd July 1846, directing William H. B. Jones and the surgeon of the HMS Snake, to repair on board the 'Mary Ann' or to the Naval Hospital at Simon's Town to survey on the health of Paymaster Potter of 57th Regt., in which the surgeons reported that the Paymaster was labouring under chronic dysentery connected with functional deranged state of the liver and they recommended him for hospital treatment.

Folio 20: case no. 25, copy of letter date 5th July 1846, signed by William H. B. Jones M.D. surgeon to W. P. Stanley Captain of HMS President, reporting about the health of Mr. Benjamin Bynoe, surgeon superintendent of Lord Auckland convict ship, that he was attacked during the voyage to the Cape with 'pneumonia' and marked symptoms of incipients pthtisis, which required immediate removal for hospital treatment.

Folio 20: case no. 26, Joseph Poole, aged 36, Able Seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, periostitis tibia, two months ago presented himself with a swelling or tumifaction over the right tibia which was painful, hot and tender when pressed, and he said that these symptoms came on at indefinite period more especially during the damp weather, has never had syphilis but date the cause of his affection some six years back while in the Merchant Service; put on sick list 11 July 1846, discharged 22 July 1846 to duty.

Folio 21: case no. 27, John Ing, aged 36, Private Marine, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, syphilis, placed on the sick list with sore throat, on examining him found an ulcer on the left pendulum palati, it was deep, circular with a slough in its accompanied with an inflammatory areola, on the 27 April last this man was sent to the hospital at Simon's Town with a [primary?] sore situated at the base of glans penis; put on sick list 17 July 1846, discharged 12 August 1846 to duty.

Folios 22-23: case no. 28, William Godwin, aged 29, Admiral's Joiner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, phlegmonous erysipelas of right knee; put on sick list 17 July 1846, discharged 13 August 1846 to duty.
