Folio 25: 8 November 1824. Hayes much relieved, Lyons convalescent, Patten complains of pain at the posterior ends of the lower false ribs, Tullock is slowly getting better. The Lizard lights sighted in the evening and the journal concluded since Captain Lyon will ask for all journals on the following morning.
Folio 26: A return of the sick and wounded of His Majesty's Sloop Griper between the 10th day of June 1824 and the 8th day of November 1824 employed on a voyage of discovery. Nosological table listing a total of 18 cases. Synocha, 1; Phlogosis, 4, of which 1 was invalided; Rheumatismus, 1; Hepatitis, 1, still on the list; Catarrhus, 4, of which 1 is still on the list; Diarrhoea, 1; Syphilis, 3, of which 1 is still on the list; Gonorrhoea, 2; Contusio, 1, still on the list.
Folios 26 - 27: Surgeon's general remarks on the cases of illness during the voyage, beginning with an apology for the journal and begging the Board's indulgence and consideration of the hardship's endured by all aboard. Discussion of the nature of each of the illnesses in the journal and of their causes. There were some complaints bordering on rheumatic affections combined with catarrh where the men did not wish to be placed on the sick list because of the hazardous conditions the ship was facing. Of the three cases of syphilis, two afflicted the same man, the relapse being brought about by exposure to the wet and cold during his zealous attempts to be useful. Few of the cases of sickness could be attributed to the voyage itself. The Surgeon makes the point that from the night of the thirty first of August to the twenty fourth of September, no man considered his life in safety, and during a great part of that time each considered his life in imminent peril, and that twice during that time everyone had given himself up for lost, water was short, there was no comfort below decks because of the humidity and lack of ventilation, but in spite of there being every ordinary cause of disease there was very little sickness. He suggests that great mental stress may have acted to suppress disease and offers the number of cases that presented themselves after the twenty fourth as evidence. He begs the Board's indulgence for departing from the usual form of such journals, his intention in doing so was to honestly recommend himself to their favour, 9 November 1824, Signed, W Leyson, Assistant Surgeon, HMS Griper.
