Description

Folios 20 – 21: 15 September 1824. They again found themselves in shoaling water the previous night but Captain Lyon soon found deeper water. Captain Lyon had intended sailing for Marble Island but because the Hudson’s Bay Company ships sometimes leave the factories later than this, he determined to sail for England. All were very grieved that the expedition should be frustrated within 60 miles of its destination.

Folio 21: 17 September 1824. Samuel Martin’s shoulder getting better. Land sighted in the morning and named Tom’s Island for the officer who had the watch when it was first seen. The Captain has observed the same irregularities in the compasses on the way back down the Sound as were found at the same positions on the way up, leading to the conclusion that some law must govern them. Hard gales and sleet or snow persist and the lead is constantly going.

Folio 21: 22 September 1824. Samuel Martin has pain in his shoulder. Two days of fair wind were followed by two of heavy gales with no way of telling which way the ship was drifting. On the weather clearing they found they had been going South. Below decks are sealed to keep water out and are very humid from the boilers and wet clothing and they are rationed to a quart of water a man each day. In spite of everything the crew remains healthy.

Folios 21 – 22: 24 September 1824. John Farrell, aged 28, Seaman; disease or hurt, headache, with a sense of fullness about the eyes and constipated bowels. Discharged to duty, 27 September 1824 [folio 22]. Robert Johnson, aged 29, Seaman; disease or hurt, slight cough, with headache, nose stuffed, pulse 84, skin above natural, bowels regular. Discharged to duty, 28 September 1824 [folio 22]. At 3:30am made Digges Islands on South shore of Hudson’s Straits, great relief on being back in deep water.

Folio 22: 25 September 1824. Johnson and Farrell both better. Near Salisbury Island and Nottingham Island, having sailed north during the night. Met with Inuit people in canoes who traded everything they had, including their jackets, and returned ashore half naked. Got three or four tons of ice for water. Very strong tides observed setting up ripples in the water.

Folio 22: 27 September 1824. Treatment of Martin and Johnson, Farrell returned to duty.

Folio 22: 28 September 1824. James Hayes, aged 25, Seaman; disease or hurt, copper coloured spots on his neck and shoulders, pain over the sternum. Still on sick list at close of journal. Robert Johnson returned to duty.

Folio 22: 29 September 1824. Samuel Martin free from pain, James Hayes had severe pain about the sternum during the night.

Folios 22 – 23: 30 September 1824. John Atkinson, aged 23, Seaman; disease or hurt, headache with severe cough but no pain of chest, rather a soreness in the larynx. Returned to duty, 17 October 1824 [folio 24]. Further treatment of James Hayes.

Folio 23: 1 October 1824. Treatment of Hayes, Martin and Atkinson.

Folio 23: 2 October 1824. Hayes’ pains continue, Atkinson improving. Cleared Hudson’s Straits, flocks of grouse observed crossing the straits.

Folio 23: 3 October 1824. Hayes’ gums becoming tender, pain abating. Sufficient water obtained from a piece of ice to raise the daily allowance to half a gallon a man.

Folio 23: 4 October 1824. Samuel Martin’s shoulder becoming well, James Hayes’ mouth more sore, John Atkinson’s cough better.

Folio 23: 7 October 1824. James Hayes’ mouth still sore, salivary glands affected. John Atkinson improving.

Folio 23: 10 October 1824. James Hayes’ mouth not so sore but a hard swelling forming. John Atkinson fit for duty if weather permitted.

Folio 23: 12 October 1824. Hayes’ mouth nearly well. In company with the Phoenix whaler from Whitby, she had taken 15 ‘fish’ and was short of bread.

Folios 23 – 24: 15 October 1824. Thomas Lyons, aged 27, Seaman; disease or hurt, very severe cough, with much soreness in the direction of the trachea, pulse 88 full, skin hot. Convalescent at close of journal. Samuel Martin returned to duty. A gale has been blowing since 4 October, with heavy rain, snow or sleet, during which time the ship was driving up Davis Straits. The ship very damp, mallemuck have been caught using a hook and line baited with fat.

Folio 24: 16 October 1824. Treatment of Hayes and Lyons. Shoals of porpoises seen, the mallemuck shelter in the lee of the ship.

Folio 24: 17 October 1824. John Patten, aged 31, Seaman; disease or hurt, severe contusion over the glutei muscles and partial abrasion of the skin, from a fall off a chest during a heavy sea. Still on sick list at close of journal. John Atkinson sent to duty, Thomas Lyons free from cough.

Folio 24: 18 October 1824. Thomas Tullock, aged 42, Seaman; disease or hurt, difficulty of breathing and pain of the chest, from being thrown over the wheel the previous night. Still on sick list at close of journal. Treatment of Hayes, Lyons and Patten.

Folio 24: 19 October 1824. Treatment of Lyons and Tullock. Folio 24: 20 October 1824. Treatment of Lyons and Tullock.

Folio 24: 21 October 1824. Treatment of Patten, Lyons and Tullock. Folio 25: 23 October 1824. Treatment of Hayes, Lyons and Tullock.
