Folios 264-265. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission. It proposes changes to the dietary allowance and the rules of the workhouse and requests the Commissioners' sanction. Dietary Allowance. Able bodied men and women: Breakfast - 1 pint of milk reduced to 1.5 gills; dinner on Tuesdays and Saturdays - Men 9 oz of meat reduced to 7 oz. Women 7 oz of meat reduced to 6 oz. Children: Dinner on meat days - at present children above 9 the same as women, under 9 to be dieted at discretion. Proposed - ages 9 to 13, 4oz of meat; ages 5 to 9, 3oz of meat; below 5, 2oz of meat. Dinner on broth days - at present children above 9 the same as women, under 9 to be dieted at discretion. Proposed - ages 5 to 9, 4 oz of bread; below 5, 3 oz of bread. Breakfast - at present children above 9 the same as women, under 9 to be dieted at discretion. Proposed all ages, 1 gill of milk with porridge at discretion. Rules alterations to the hours prescribed: The hour of breakfast to be 8am, with an in interval of 30 minutes - 8 to 8 30am. The hour of dinner to be 1pm, with an interval of 1 hour, 1 to 2pm. Children to go to bed at 8pm, men and women at 9pm. They request the following rule to be inserted in those referring to the 'Discipline [--] Diet: No paupers shall be allowed to carry out of the dining hall any portion of their meals. Annotated: John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] for his opinion of the proposed alterations. Approved. Acknowledge receipt and state this, the Commissioners having the question of dietary generally under consideration cannot at present sanction the proposed alterations. Paper Number: 3006/B/1839.
