Folio 8: Synopsis of the daily sick book, during the period of this account. [Nosologically arranged].
Folios 9-10: William Worley, aged 29, Marine; disease or hurt, penumonia. Put on sick list, 8 July 1835, Santa Martha. Invalided, [26 July 1836]. A recurrence of pneumonia for which he was discharged to hospital in March. He had only returned a few days when it returned. His symptoms became worse before he was invalided for a change of climate.
Folio 10: James Benjamin, aged 19, Boy; disease or hurt, paracusis. Put on sick list, 26 July 1836, Port Royal, Jamaica. Invalided, [26 July 1836].Had been deaf since prior to joining from HMS President on 3 November 1835.
Folio 10: John Huddy, aged 32, Seaman; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 13 August 1836, Port Royal, Jamaica. Discharged to hospital. [13 August 1836]. Described as of dark complexion and muscular appearance, he belonged to [His Majestys Survey Vessel] Dee and was on loan to Cruizer.
Folios 10-11: Samuel Bryant, aged 21, Armourers Mate; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 13 August 1836, Port Royal, Jamaica. Discharged to hospital. [13 August 1836].Described as of delicate, spare habit but of industrious and active disposition, was taken ill while working at the furnace.
Folio 11: John Turner, aged 36, Carpenters Mate; disease or hurt, visceral disease. Put on sick list, 19 August 1836, Port Royal, Jamaica. Discharged to hospital. [19 August 1836].He had been under treatment for flatulent colic from 11 July to 5 August 1836.
Folio 11: John Turner, aged 36, Carpenters Mate; disease or hurt, visceral disease. Put on sick list, 20 September 1836, Port Royal, Jamaica. Invalided, 26 September 1836. Placed on the sick list immediately on his return from HMS Magnificent, where he had been sent to convalesce on discharge from the hospital.
Folios 11-12: James Robinson, aged 30, Marine; disease or hurt, pleuritis. Put on sick list, 8 December 1836, Bermuda. Discharged to hospital, 10 December 1836. Fell from the gang board while returning to the ship drunk, he was not in the water long but vomited and felt much exhaustion afterwards. He was incapable of saying whether he had received any injury but none was found on examination. He was feverish the following day. Sent to hospital since the ship was refitting.
Folio 12: Mr Archibald Douglas Jolly, aged 26, Midshipman; disease or hurt, tertiana. Put on sick list, 13 December 1836, Bermuda. Discharged to hospital, 14 December 1836. Taken ill while on leave at Clarence Hill, Bermuda. Sent to hospital for further treatment while the ship refitted.
Folio 12: John Bambroke, aged 29, Marine; disease or hurt, pnemonia. Put on sick list, 24 December 1836, Bermuda. Discharged to hospital, 25 December 1836. Sent to the hospital when the ship was unfit for his treatment due to the refit.
Folios 12-13: George Petty, aged 35, Seaman; disease or hurt, lumbago. Put on sick list, 28 December 1836, Bermuda. Discharged to hospital, [9 January 1837]. His illness was apparently brought on by the wet and cold weather, sent to hospital because of the refit.
Folio 13: Thomas Sayers, aged 26, Seaman; disease or hurt, accident, concussio cerebre, compound fracture of the arm etc. Put on sick list, 21 February 1837, off Blewfields, Jamaica. Died, 21 February 1837. Fell from the fore topsail yard to the forecastle deck by the giving way of the tail of the bunt jigger block. He landed on his head and left arm, causing deep lacerated wounds and severe concussion to his head and compound fractures of both bones of his left forearm, as well as other injuries. His condition was such that amputation was impracticable and was conscious was for only a very brief time before he died.
Folios 13-15: Peter Kenny, aged 46, Boatswains Mate; disease or hurt, struck by lightning, inducing considerable nervous debility, and constitutional enervation, etc. Put on sick list, 20 April 1837, on passage from Bermuda to Halifax. Invalided, 4 May 1837. At 4:10 am the surgeon was called to see this man (and 3 others) who was struck down and injured by lightning which at this hour struck the vessel forwards, and through the medium of the chain cable had exploded near or beneath the forecastle on the larboard side. He was the worst case of those injured and was unconscious with fixed eyes and laboured breathing. His clothing was burnt and he was scorched severely from the crown of his head, down his neck and spine, over his left hip and along his thigh to just below his knee. After about 45 minutes he partially regained consciousness. Later he could remember nothing of the accident except that he had been standing by the fore bits about to relieve the watch. Invalided because of general nervous debility and constitutional enervation.
Folios 15-18: James Lucas, aged 19, Boy of 1st Class; disease or hurt, struck by lightning, inducing ptosis, loss of vision, sequel partial amaurosis. Put on sick list, 20 April 1837, on passage from Bermuda to Halifax. Discharged to duty, 14 May 1837. He was not burnt by the lightning but was knocked out and on regaining consciousness complained of pain of his right eye. He had no other ill effects other than slight vertigo and dyspnoea but his upper eyelid was paralysed. When the surgeon raised his eyelid he felt pain from the light and there were tears but little or no vision. By the 5 May he could distinguish people at a distance of about 3 feet but was very sensitive to strong light, on 14 May he was returned to day duty. On 30 May he transferred to Her Majestys Schooner Skipjack, the Cruizer being about to return to England and he wishing to remain out. On the same day a smart ticket was deemed deserving, such injury being of a nature not likely to be entirely recovered from.
Folio 18: Mr John Collier, aged 35, Acting Gunner; disease or hurt, compound dislocation of second joint of ring finger of right hand. Put on sick list, 29 April 1837, in Halifax Harbour. Discharged to leave, 16 May 1837, and then invalided [29 May 1837]. While ascending the lower deck ladder at the main hatchway, he fell backwards with the ladder into the larboard chain cable tier, landing on his right side with the hand beneath him and the finger caught in a link of the chain. He went on leave on 16 May and on his return on 29 May the wound was found to have healed although the joint was enlarged and stiff. He was unable to grasp a rope and so was invalided.
Folios 18-19: John Henry Bennett, aged 31, Captains Steward; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 4 July 1837, at sea. Discharged to the hospital at Chatham, 27 July 1837. Placed on the list for rheumatism of the ankles with some slight swelling and pain around the joints and some derangement of the chylopoioetic viscera.
