Description

Folio 18: August 1841, the ship sailed from the coast of Labrador and arrived in Antelope Harbour on 3 August, she then sailed for Sandwich Bay arrived at this place on 6 August where she stayed till 12 August. On the 13 August got to Porcupine Harbour and left on 17 August, the ship arrived at Red Bay on 21 August where she left for [Corc?] arrived at this place on 23 August and remained there till 28 August then she sailed for [St] Lawrence and anchored on 31 August.

Folio 19: case no 130, Thomas Burton, aged 28, Marine; sick or hurt, subluxatio of right knee by a fall; put on sick list 4 September 1841, discharged 11 September 1841 to duty. Folio 19: case no 131, George Elgar, aged 28, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, contusio of back by a fall; put on sick list 5 September 1841, discharged 20 September 1841 to duty. Folio 19: case no 132, Thomas L Lyster, aged 19, Midshipman; sick or hurt, phlogosis – over fatigue of weak limb; put on sick list 10 September 1841, discharged 21 September 1841 to duty. Folio 19: case no 133, Richard Rolleston, aged 24, Captain Mizen Top; sick or hurt, contusio of chest by a fall; put on sick list 6 September 1841, remained on the sick list. Folio 19: case no 134, William Jackson, aged 26, Gunner’s Crew; sick or hurt, vulnus of hand by sailneedle; put on sick list 6 September 1841, discharged 9 September 1841 to duty. Folio 19: case no 135, James Collings, aged 43, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, rheumatism of knee; put on sick list 21 September 1841, remained 21 September 1841 on the sick list. Folio 19: case no 136, James Page, aged 24, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, febricula; put on sick list 21 September 1841, remained 21 September 1841 on the sick list. Folio 19: the Surgeon superceded on the 24 September 1841 at St John's Newfoundland, and gave up the charge to Mr McCrae.

Folios 20-25: Blank. Folio 26: Nosological synopsis of cases mentioned in this journal. Folio 27: Table showing list of men who received wounds or hurts during the period of this journal. Number on the ship’s book 158, Charles Barnard, aged 21, Ordinary Seaman, pension certificate granted on 14 March 1841; nature of hurts, right inguinal hernia received on 14 March 1841.

Folios 27-29: Surgeon’s general remarks. The number of entries on the sick list were 136, there remained on closing last journal 17, making total of 153, of these there were – 1 death, 7 invalided, 8 sent to Hospital, 132 discharged to duty, and 6 remained on the list. Also includes remarks about the death of John Wigham [case no 104, Folios 15-16]. Signed: Patrick Martyn, Surgeon.
