- Folios 213-216. Draft letter from Harry Chester, Committee of the Council on Education, to the Poor Law Board, enclosing a newspaper report and letter from Mr T H Browne, H M Inspector of Workhouse Schools. He requests that the Board exert some authority over the proposals for Berwick upon Tweed Workhouse School. The Committee regard the separation of infants from older children as essential, and are not prepared to sanction the engagement of an untrained pupil teacher, particularly as the dismissal of a teacher is the result of this engagement. The attention of the Board is drawn to a Minute of 1846. The newspaper report is from the Berwick Warder. The letter from Browne hopes that the Board will not agree to the changes recommended by the School Committee. He advocates the separation of infants from older children, otherwise the teacher will be occupied keeping order amongst the infants instead of conducting the junior class. He has never suggested the workhouse children should be taught Latin and Greek. Paper Number: 50235/1851. Poor Law Union Number 325.
