Description

Folios 56-57: case no 30, Richard Joint, aged 32, Seaman; taken ill off Tortosa; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, while employed at the attack on Tortosa assisted in bursting open a door when a vault was discovered filled with armed men, he immediately received a bayonet thrust in the left breast, at the same time a musket ball entered the axilla near edge of the latissimus dorsi; put on sick list 25 September 1840, sent 18 January 1841 to the Cyclops for passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 57-58: case no 31, Thomas Grovenor, aged 29, Seaman; taken ill at Tortosa; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, stricture of urethra; put on sick list 25 September 1840, sent 8 November 1840 to the Castor for passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 58-59: case no 32, Alexander Stewart, aged 24, Seaman; taken ill at Tortosa; sick or hurt, gunshot wound; put on sick list 25 September 1840, sent 8 November 1840 to the Castor for passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 65-69: Surgeon’s general remarks. The Benbow was employed during the year in different parts of the Mediterranean, three months in the Bay of Naples, but the Greater portion of time was occupied in active operations against the troops of Mehemet Ali [Mohammed Ali Pasha] on the Coast of Syria. The Surgeon stated that the ship’s company suffered severely from the casualties of war, in which eight men were killed in the action and one marine lost his life by the explosion of a magazine of gunpowder at St Jean de Acre, but however no death from disease had taken place on board. He describes the temperature and geographical nature of the Coast of Syria and the Lebanon range, he also makes remarks on diseases of those regions namely remittent fever, catarrhs and diarrhoea. The Surgeon described the nature of the gunshot wound case no 35 [William Russell], case no 32 [Alexander Stewart], case no 24 [James Broom], case no 29 [William Minnell] and case no 30 [Richard Joint]. He also remarks on three amputation patients – case no 26 [William Cox], case no 27 [Jeffrey Wilson] and case no 28 [Alexander Mockett].
