Folios 5-8: Lewis Read, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list,, 9 May 1852, at sea. Discharged, 9 August 1852.
Folios 8-10: Edward Lyons, aged 29, Blacksmith; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 5 June 1852, at sea. Discharged, 24 July 1852. Complained of severe aching pains in loins and extremities, aggravated by motion, relieved by warmth.
Folios 10-11: Walter Marshall, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, contusion. Put on sick list, 28 July 1852, at sea. Discharged, 27 August 1852. In consequence of a collision between the Assistance and her steam tender the Pioneer, a spare spar laid across the forecastle broke in the middle and jammed Marshall between it and the bulwark, catching him just above the pelvis.
Folios 11-19: William Cutbush, aged 34, Private Marine; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 22 September 1852, in Northumberland Sound. Died, 27 February 1853. A man of scrophulous constitution, with a pale and anxious countenance, whilst walking the upper deck on sentry duty was seized with a violent fit of coughing with pain in the lower left side of his chest, so severe as to make him shriek when the paroxysms come on. He had only been discharged from the sick list on 19 September for an attack of bronchitis, which he had suffered the last three months.
Folios 18-19 have an account of a post mortem examination of the body, carried out with Mr J B Richards, Assistant Surgeon of the Pioneer. His left lung was found to be ‘compressed into a mass of black condensed matter four or five inches long and an inch thick at its thickest part, lying along the side of the spine in the upper part of the chest’.
Folio 19: Isaac Barnett, aged 27, Captain of Main Top; disease or hurt, periostitis. Put on sick list,, 16 March 1853, at Northumberland Sound. Discharged, 28 March 1853. ‘A man of scrophulous diathesis, complains of lameness caused by pain in the lower part of the left fibula’.
Folios 20-29: Isaac Barnett, aged 27, Captain of the Main Top; disease or hurt, periostitis. Put on sick list,, 21 May 1853, at Northumberland Sound. Died, 28 January 1854. He had been free from pain since being discharged in March and was sent away on a sledge party on 2 May 1853. His right ankle became painful and he was returned to the ship on the first returning sledge. Probes and lancets were used to release pus from the swelling but the swelling continued and the discharge became foul smelling and he suffered cough, shortness of breath and vomiting. On 17 January 1854 his gums were spongy.
Folios 29-31: Thomas Barber, aged 31, Sailmaker; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list,, 14 July 1853, at Northumberland Sound. Discharged to duty on the lower deck, 22 November 1853. Complained of rheumatic pains in shoulders, chest, wrists, hips and knees, and a troublesome cough. He had suffered these complaints since his return from Spring travelling.
Folios 31-32: Gwylm Munder, aged 32, Bombardier Royal Marine Artillery; disease or hurt, gastritis. Put on sick list, 28 September 1853, in Wellington Channel. Discharged to duty, 8 October 1853.
Folios 32-33: Benjamin Young, aged 39, Ice Quarter Master; disease or hurt, contusion. Put on sick list,, 1 March 1854, in Wellington Channel. Discharged to duty, 11 March 1854. Came on board from the HMS Pioneer having slipped going down the ladder and injured his right elbow.
