Description

Folio 60: William Shortt, aged 24, Marine; disease or hurt, fracture. Put on sick list, 5 December 1854. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 3 January 1855. Wounded at the battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854, he had been sent to the Military Hospital at Scutari, from which he was discharged on 4 December 1854. He had two musket ball wounds across the left forearm, from the larger of which he said several pieces of bone had been removed. Folio 60: Daniel Coghlan, aged 23, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 29 December 1854. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 3 January 1855. Folio 60: James Nookes, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 30 December 1854. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 3 January 1855.

Folios 60-61: William Davis, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 31 December 1854. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 4 January 1855.

Folio 61: Henry Song, aged 26, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 31 December 1854. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 3 January 1855. Folio 61: The following men were wounded on the 17 October 1854, and with the exception of the first two, who died on the following day, were sent to Therapia Hospital on the 23rd October 1854. Stewart McClure, aged 41, Seaman, compound fracture of leg immediately below the knee: amputation performed above the knee, about 2 hours afterwards. William Gumbrell, Seaman, contusion of abdomen, no wound. Charles Solomon, Marine, lacerated wound of back and injury to spine. Stephen Sulivan, Seaman, concussio cerebri. William Neal, Seaman, compound fracture of wrist. Joseph Isaacs, Seaman, bullet wound of both thighs. Thomas Geoghan, Seaman, fracture of the arm. John Westerby, Boy, lacerated wound of shoulder. Robert Macfarlane, Seaman, fracture of thigh. William Sampson, Seaman, wound of scalp. Charles Braggs, Boy, lacerated wound of back. Samuel Jenkins, Seaman, fracture of the arm and fibula. John Macdonald, Seaman, wound of arm. Folio 61: Charles Nolloth, aged 40, Lieutenant; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 1 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 4 January 1855. Folio 61: Henry Biggs, aged 30, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 2 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 4 January 1855. Folio 61: Francis Osborne, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, variola. Put on sick list, 5 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 6 January 1855. Folio 61: William Sutton, aged 29, Marine; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 5 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 6 January 1855.

Folios 61-62: Charles J Dobree, aged 19, Midshipman; disease or hurt, constipatio. Put on sick list, 6 January 1855. Died, 7 January 1855.

Folio 62: James Minhinnet, aged 34, Marine; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 23 January 1855. Died, 24 January 1855. Brought on board from the camp at Balaclava in the last stages of exhaustion having been suffering diarrhoea and rheumatism for several weeks, he was ‘beyond the aid of medicine when he was brought on board’. Folio 62: James Moxey, aged 25, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, fracture. Put on sick list, 17 October 1854. Invalided, 7 February 1855. Received a compound fracture of the right lower jaw from a shell splinter while in action against the enemy batteries at Sevastopol. When brought forward for survey the bone was denuded for some distance and no attempt had been made at union, a free discharge continued from the wound and there was some pain. Folio 62: James Hanson, aged 24, Cooper’s Crew; disease or hurt, vulnus. Put on sick list, 17 October 1854. Sent to hospital at Malta, 9 February 1854. Received a lacerated wound on the outside of the right foot from a shell splinter while in action against the enemy batteries at Sevastopol. Folio 62: William Cornish, aged 25, Marine; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 7 December 1854. Sent to hospital, 9 February 1854. Sent on board the ship from the Crimea, where he had been for upwards of two months and had contracted scurvy and diarrhoea. He recovered from the scurvy but was sent to hospital from debility. Folio 62: Henry Downton, aged 37, Marine; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 5 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Malta, 9 February 1855. Brought on board from the Crimea on 5 January at which time he had been suffering for three weeks from rheumatism, oedema of the lower extremities and diarrhoea. He improved on board but his legs remained swollen and he was unable to move about. Folio 62: Morgan Donovan, aged 56, Boatswain’s Mate; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 14 January 1855. Invalided, 7 February 1855. Sent on board from the Crimea, where he had been since 6 October, on 13 January, he had been suffering rheumatism for some time. He had served for more than 30 years. Folio 62: Edmund Hutchings, aged 34, Marine; disease or hurt, cerebral congestion. Put on sick list, 11 February 1854. Died, 20 February 1854. Attacked with rigors and headache and complained of a sense of nausea, his body and legs were also swollen.

Folio 63: Thomas Morgan, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 1 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 23 February 1855. Folio 63: John Hart, aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, catarrh. Put on sick list, 2 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 23 February 1855. Folio 63: Samuel Kane, aged 34, Marine; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 5 January 1855. Sent to hospital [at Therapia], 1 March 1855. Brought on board from the camp at Balaclava where he had been ill for ten days, suffering cough and diarrhoea. His general health improved and he was allowed out of bed but the diarrhoea returned, his legs became oedematous and he suffered incontinence of urine. Folio 63: Luke Jenhenson, aged 30, Blacksmith; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 6 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 1 March 1855. The diarrhoea appeared to have been brought on by ‘too free indulgence in spirituous liquors ashore’. Folio 63: George Ashton, aged 30, Marine; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 28 January 1855. Sent to hospital at Therapia, 1 March 1855. Returned from Therapia hospital where he had been sent for treatment from Balaclava on 25 January 1855, he was very weak and suffering cough, diarrhoea and rheumatism.
