Folios 265 to 276 describe in detail the ventilation and air filtering system employed on ships of the Niger Expedition, designed by Dr Reid. Each cabin or compartment had a tube supplying fresh air to the lower part of the cabin and another tube to extract warm air from the top, each tube controlled by a system of valves. Folio 269 has illustrations pasted in showing a plan and profile of ventilation 'on the vacuum principle' and on the 'plenum principle'. A large sheet of paper with 8 diagrams is inserted between Folios 269 and 270, the key to the diagram is on Folios 272 and 273. Folios 270 to 272 have tables listing the number and positions of valves in the ventilation system. The use of the 'medicator or purifying chamber' is described on Folios 273 to 276 and there are tables showing temperatures measured on the upper deck, in the Captain's cabin, in the gun room and on the lower deck.

Folios 278 to 279 describe the geology of the Niger, condensed from notes taken by Dr Stanger. With an enclosed diagram of an 'Ideal section of the River Niger from the Delta to Egga, shewing the relation of sandstone to the older rocks'.

Folios 280 to 300 have tables of 'Meteorological observations during the years 1841 and 1842. Niger Expedition'. Showing barometer readings, temperature and dew point readings four times a day, minimum and maximum temperatures, wind direction and remarks.

Folios 301 to 318 contain monthly tables of meteorological observations at Cape Coast Castle from April 1840 to July 1841, taken by Governor McLean.

Folio 301 is a title folio.

Folio 302 has a [printed] sketch pasted in of 'Cape Coast Castle, West Coast of Africa, view from the anchorage', unsigned. Pasted inside the rear cover is a map 'The lower course of the River Niger as far as it was ascended in the expedition under Captain Trotter RN 1841', taken from a publication by John Arrowsmith, dated 27 May 1843.
