Description

Folio 127: William Kingdon, aged 30, Catechist; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 10 October 1841, at the confluence. Died,12 October 1841, near Aboh. He had been ill onboard the Amelia tender since about 24 September and was received on board the Albert on 10 October. According to the servants he had been dosing himself with Seidlitz powders. He was buried on an island opposite Aboh.

Folios 127-132: John Duncan, aged 36, Master at Arms; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 19 October 1841, at Fernando Po. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 19 January 1842. 'Tall [form], well made. Temperament inclining to the sanguineous, never abroad before. Has had small pox, syphilis, and a leg fractured many years since. Has been a farmer, commercial traveller and sixteen years in the 1st Life Guard'. On 3 November it is noted that 'he has been taking quinine daily'. An old ulcer reopened on his right foot on 9 November and from that point the treatment is for that ailment. He was sent on shore at Ascension Island for the benefit of hospital treatment and change of air.

Folios 132-135: James Woodhouse, aged 25, Acting Assistant Surgeon; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 12 October 1841, at Fernando Po. Died, 30 October 1841. On 20 October he was removed on shore at Clarence Cove and was very debilitated by the move but had a distinct remission of his fever. By 24 October the remissions were becoming less distinct.

Folios 135-137: Morgan Kingston, aged 40, Private Marine; disease or hurt, gastritis. Put on sick list, 2 November 1841, at Fernando Po. Died, 6 November 1841. 'Figure rather slight muscular, temperament bilious' He had served in the Mediterranean, West Indies, Cape of Good Hope, St Helena and Mauritius. He had been a sick attendant during the fever and was unceasing in his attention in the river. A post mortem examination was carried out the day of his death, on account of the rapid decomposition of the body, by Mr Thomson of the Soudan and Dr Stanger, the geologist. The findings are noted.

Folios 138-139: Richard Lamb, aged 21, Midshipman's Steward; disease or hurt, febris remittens bilious. Put on sick list, 26 November 1841, on passage from Fernando Po to the Isle of Rollas. Discharged to duty, 12 January 1842. 'Of good constitution, short, dark, bilious temperament. Has had small pox. Has been two years in the West Indies and four years in the Mediterranean'.

Folio 139: Daniel Boyle, aged 23, 'African Boy'; disease or hurt, frambresia [yaws]. Put on sick list, 29 November 1841, on passage from Fernando Po to Rollas. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842.

Folios 139-141: Theodore Vogel, aged 36, Botanist; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 30 November 1841, at Fernando Po. Died at Fernando Po, 17 December 1841. 'A native of Germany. Tall swarthy. Temperament nervoso bilious'. He had been sent out of the river in the Wilberforce suffering from the fever. Complained to Mr Thomson of dysenteric symptoms from which he had been suffering for a couple of days. On folio 141 the results of a post mortem examination of his chest and abdomen are noted.

Folio 142: Edward Capps, aged 21, Captain's Steward; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 8 December 1841, at Fernando Po. Discharged to the hospital at Ascension Island, 29 January 1842. He had suffered from 'Niger fever', from which he nearly died, and was discharged from the sick list on 10 November. Discharged to the hospital because he was very emaciated.

Folios 142-144: Tom Davies, aged 26, Krooman; disease or hurt, phthysis pulmonalis. Put on sick list, 6 November 1841, at Fernando Po. Died on the passage to Ascension, 17 January 1842. He was received from the Pluto for a passage to Ascension Island in a weak state and very emaciated.

Folio 144: Joseph Perkins, aged 24, [Commander's] Steward HMS Pluto; disease or hurt, debilitas a febre. Put on sick list, 28 December 1841, received at Rollas Island. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842. He had suffered fever contracted in the Calabar River and was much debilitated.

Folio 145: William Algar, aged 31, Seaman, and Michael Morgan, aged 29, Seaman; disease or hurt, debilitas a febre. Put on sick list, 28 December 1841, received at Rollas Island. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842. Both were received from the Pluto.

Folios 145-146: John Robinson, aged 24, Seaman; disease or hurt, dysenteria chronica. Put on sick list, 14 January 1842, on passage to Ascension Island. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842. 'Man of colour. Is a native of Jamaica and has been at sea for many years'.

Folios 146-147: John Wood, aged 34, Quarter Master; disease or hurt, phthysis pulmonalis. Put on sick list, 16 January 1842, on passage to Ascension Island. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842. He had lost 8 or 9 brothers and sisters to consumption. He had been a good deal in warm climates.

Folios 147-148: William Bowden, aged 49, Purser; disease or hurt, dyspepsia. Put on sick list, 27 January 1842, on passage to Ascension Island. Discharged to Ascension Hospital, 29 January 1842. He was one of those sent out of the river in the Wilberforce suffering from fever, from which he recovered but had since experienced a severe relapse and was left debilitated.

Folio 148: King George, aged 28, Krooman; disease or hurt, pleuritis. Discharged to hospital at Ascension Island, February 1842.

Folio 149: John Huxley, aged 25, Sick Attendant; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, March 1842, at Ascension Island. Discharged to hospital at Ascension Island. He had suffered from fever at Fernando Po and, like most other cases, had since suffered bowel complaints.

Folio 149: William Vine, aged 22, Armourer; disease or hurt, febris intermittens. Put on sick list, 25 March 1842, at Ascension Island. Invalided at Ascension Island, 16 June 1842. This case followed a severe attack of Niger fever [Folios 64-66] after which he suffered intermittent fever and dysentery more or less constantly.

Folios 149-151: David Cogan, aged 27, 2nd Engineer; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 2 April 1842, at Ascension Island. Invalided at Ascension, 16 June 1842.

Folio 151: William Bowden, aged 49, Purser; disease or hurt, debilitas a febre. Invalided at Ascension, 16 June 1842. Had previously suffered fever [Folio 67] and dyspepsia [Folios 147-148] and had lost strength, he was invalided for change of climate.

Folio 151: Charles Loader, aged 31, Carpenter's Mate; disease or hurt, debilitas a febre. Invalided at Ascension, 16 June 1842. He had suffered fever [Folios 57-58] and since then had been troubled with intermittent fever and general debility and was invalided for change of climate.
