Folios 64-66: William Vine, aged 22, Armourer; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 18 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged, 29 December 1841. He felt unwell after attending the funeral of a former messmate on shore.
Folio 67: G B Harvey, aged 33, Acting Master; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 17 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Wilberforce for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841.
Folio 67: William Bowden, aged 47, Purser; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 18 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to the HMS Wilberforce for passage to the hospital at Ascension Island, 18 September 1841. He had been given medicine and the fever was in remission but since it was likely to return he was sent out of the river.
Folios 67-70: David Stenhouse, aged 25, Acting Lieutenant; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 19 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Died at Fernando Po, 28 October 1841. 'Is of a slight make, face pale, subject to pectoral complaints, temperament nervous'. Complained after returning from the shore where he had been measuring the height of the river, 'the sun being oppressively hot'.
Folios 71-73: John Langley, aged 36, 1st Engineer; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 19 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to duty at the island of Rollas, 25 December 1841. His fever became a 'regular tertian intermittent' and yielded to quinine.
Folios 73-76: David Carlton, aged 34, Private of the Sappers; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 20 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to duty at Fernando Po, 12 December 1841. 'Well formed, leucophlegmatic temperament, never been unwell before'. His fever became tertian intermittent and was treated with quinine.
Folios 76-77: William R Bush, aged 28, Captain's Clerk; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 22 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to duty, 23 November 1841.
Folios 77-79: John Fuge, aged 28, Seaman; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 22 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Died, 28 September 1841, near Egga. 'Short, well made; sanguine temperament. Has been ten years at sea, chiefly in warm climates; three of which were served on the coast of Africa'.
Folios 79-80: James Brown, aged 26, 3rd Engineer; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, on passage from the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Invalided at Fernando Po, 22 November 1841. 'Short stature, slight make, nervous temperament', he was thought unlikely to improve because of the climate and was invalided.
Folios 81-82: William Henry Webb, [aged 20, Mate] disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 21 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to duty, 20 December 1841. 'Form slight, temperament phlegmatic', received from the Amelia tender with febrile symptoms.
Folios 82-84: James W Fairholme, aged 21, Mate; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 21 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River]. Discharged to duty, 20 January 1842. 'Tall, slight form. Temperament sanguineous.' His fever became intermittent and was treated with quinine.
Folios 84-88: James Barrett, aged 22, Drummer; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, at the confluence of the Niger and Tchadda [Benue River] to Egga. Sent to the hospital at Ascension Island, 29 January 1842. By November his fever had assumed the form of a tertian intermittent and on 1 December it is noted that it was more severe during first quarter of the moon, although it continued through the month. It was mild by the end of January but since he was very weak he was sent to the hospital.
Folios 88-91: William Henry Wilmot, aged 19, Clerk; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, on passage from the confluence to Egga. Died, 5 November 1841, at Fernando Po. On 8 October, while suffering from delirium, he jumped overboard during the night. He could not swim and the current was strong but two of the African crew jumped after him and rescued him. On 4 November he felt quite easy, only suffering a 'general botheration', the following morning his breathing was laborious, his pulse was weak and frequent and he died at 3:30pm.
Folios 91-94: Bird Allen, aged 35, Commander of HMS Soudan; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, on passage from the confluence to Egga. Died, 25 October 1841, at Fernando Po. 'Slight make. Complexion dark, temperament bilious. Has been much in tropical climates'.
Folios 95-98: John McLaughlin, aged 39, Sailmaker; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, on passage from the confluence to Egga. Invalided at Fernando Po, 22 November 1841. 'Countenance sallow, emaciated. Phlegmatic temperament. Has been many years in tropical climate and ten years since he was tapped for dropsy, supervening on West India fever'. He again suffered dropsy and was invalided as being unlikely to improve in the climate of Fernando Po. He left Fernando Po in the Warree schooner, in charge of Dr William Stanger, on 23 November. The Warree was towed by the Albert for 10 days and the surgeon had to 'tap' Mc Laughlin on 28 November, drawing off 16 quarts of fluid.
Folios 98-99: Richard Mowatt, aged 29, Captain's Clerk; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 23 September 1841, on passage from the confluence to Egga. Discharged, 20 October 1841.
Folios 99-103: John McClintock, aged 23, Stoker; disease or hurt, febris remittens adynamica. Put on sick list, 24 September 1841, on passage from the confluence to Egga. Died, 19 November 1841, at Fernando Po. 'Complexion fair. Temperament leucophlegmatic, well formed. In general has enjoyed good health. Has not been serving in tropical climates'. From 10 November he was able to take a walk every day and he was discharged from the hospital on board ship on 18 November. The following morning he was found dead on the lower deck. The body was sent ashore and an autopsy carried out the next morning in the presence of Dr Stanger, Geologist, and Mr Thomson, Surgeon of HMS Soudan.
Folios 102-107: Autopsy of John McClintock. Detailed description of the post mortem examination and the condition of his internal organs. Evidence is found of contusions on the scalp and coagulated blood in the brain, likely to be the immediate cause of his death.
