Description
Content
Folios 243-244. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to John Andrewartha, Mevagissey, acknowledging his letter of 7 December concerning assessment of property [in Tregony] for the poor rate. The Parish Assessment Act directs that the actual rent paid should not be considered conclusive. The assessment should be made on an estimate of a reasonable yearly rent. The letter, which is crossed through from this point, continues that in practice the actual rent charged will be a guide. However, where the situation allows a higher rent to be charged, this should be taken into account. In the case Andrewartha describes, the additional value of fields let out separately should be taken into account. But the same rule cannot be applied to larger holdings of land. Paper Number: 11145/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
