Description
Content
Folio 238A. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to the Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, concerning the resolution, passed by the guardians that clothing for paupers in their workhouse should be paid for by the establishment and not by the parishes the paupers came from. The Commission point out that this arrangement is inconsistent with the Poor Law Act, which specifies that the pauper's parish is liable for this expense, regardless of whether the pauper is relieved in or out of the workhouse. Consequently they cannot sanction the proposal as in their opinion it is illegal. Paper Number: 11098/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
