Description
Content
Folio 235. Draft letter from E C [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] to R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, acknowledging his letter of 26 November 1841, concerning the proposed sale of Kea poorhouse. He explains that there is no need for the lessor to grant the churchwardens and overseers a fresh lease. He cites the procedure followed in similar cases, where the guardians have offered for sale the interest of the parish in the workhouse. In this case the interest of the parish could be sold and Mr Gwatkin [Robert Lovell Gwatkin] could pass the property to the purchaser for a term of 999 years, determinable on three lives. However, under 5& 6 Wm IV c 69 s 3 this would need the consent of the owners and ratepayers of Kea and he has sent an order to the parish to convene a meeting for that purpose. He returns the copy of the lease Hodge sent him [not included] and states that the Commission are willing to inspect original documents, thus avoiding the expense of making copies. Annotated: 12 copies of meeting order dated and sent 8 December 1841. Paper Number: 10810/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
