Description
Content
Folios 232-234. Letter from R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, enclosing the requested copy of the lease of the land on which Kea Poor House was built. He explains that the lease was granted specifically for the building of the poor house and the churchwardens and overseers cannot use the land for any other purpose. However, the lessor has agreed to let them sell the lease 'for a term of 99 years determinable on the death of the survivor of three lives', or to grant such a lease directly to them. They intend to use the proceeds as part payment of the debt incurred by the building of the poor house. Copy of lease dated 36 March 1836 in which Robert Lovell Gwatkin leases land on Hallanvrean Common, also referred to as Hallavrane Moor, to William Crago and Francis Michell, Churchwardens and John Magor and Thomas Pengilly, Overseers of the Poor of Kea, for the sole purpose of building a poorhouse, for an annual rent of five shillings. It also gives details of the consent of the lessor to the sale of the lease by the parish. Annotated: to issue sale meeting order of the interest of the parish. Return copy with advice from the Burslem letter. 3099/A resolution consenting to the sale. Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Paper Number: 10810/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
