Description
Content
Folios 109-111. Letter from R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, informing them that the board of guardians have placed a newspaper advertisement for medical gentlemen to undertake [smallpox] vaccination of everyone within Truro Poor Law Union district at 1s 6d for each successful case. However, all nine medical gentlemen who replied refuse to contract at less the 2s 6d. The board request advice. Hodge has found that all the other unions in Cornwall are paying 1s 6d or less. He asks if they could divide the union into three districts and employ medical gentlemen in each. This would allow simultaneous vaccination if there was an outbreak of smallpox. He requests a reply before the next meeting of the guardians on 6 January 1841. Copy of advertisement inviting contractors for vaccination in the following districts of Truro Union: 1. St Mary and St Allen. 2. St Clement and St Erme. 3. St Agnes and Perranzabuloe. 4. Kenwyn and Tregavethan. 5. Kea and Feock. 6. St Anthony, Gerrans, St Just [St Just in Roseland], Philleigh, Ruan Lanihorne, Veryan. 7. Cornelly, Cuby, Ladock, Lamorran, Merther, St Michael Penkevil, Probus and Tregony. The advertisement species conditions and rate of pay. Annotated: immediate request for the St Columb paper and to adopt the [method used]. Paper Number: 26/V/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
