Description
Content
Folios 441-448. Letter from John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], to the Poor Law Commission, stating that the Select Committee of the House of Commons, which is investigating the matters raised in his own and in Charles Mott's [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] reports on the Keighley Poor Law Union, has decided to adjourn the hearing for a day in order to consider the issues. As he may have to set off to Lancashire before learning the conclusions of the Committee, he encloses for the consideration of the Commissioners a memorandum which he prepared for his own satisfaction on the evidence taken during the enquiry, as it affects his own report. As Charles Mott was present during the enquiry, John Walsham does not include any comments on the adverse evidence relating to Charles Mott's report although he considers that the main points of both reports were substantiated. Enclosed is the memorandum dated 9 July 1842. It contains detailed notes on the points in Walsham's report which were disputed by the officers of the Keighley Poor Law Union and his views on the evidence. Each paragraph of the annexed report is numbered and commented on. He concludes that the enquiry has shown that his report has been vindicated, except in certain minor details. Also enclosed is printed copy of the report of Sir John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] to the Poor Law Commission relating to the Keighley Poor Law Union (7995/B/1842). Ordered to be printed by the House of Commons 20 June 1842 (Sir James Graham). Paper Number: 9279/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
