Description
Content
Folios 439-440. Letter from R Metcalfe [Clerk to the Keighley Magistrates] to the Poor Law Commission, replying to the letter requesting details of summonses issued by the magistrates between Christmas 1840 and Lady Day 1842. He states that although he is leaving for London at 5am am in order to appear before the Committee of the House of Commons he has looked through the register and can find only one instance of a summons being issued on 30 September [1841] in the case of William Cordonly against the relieving officers of Haworth. His clerk says there are fewer than six instances over more than two years. He encloses a statement from his clerk to that effect, which he is sure is accurate. Enclosed is a statement from Jonathan Whitley certifying that he has worked as a clerk with Richard Metcalfe, Attorney at Law in Keighley, since before Christmas 1840. He has issued nearly all the magistrates' summonses from Christmas 1840 until Lady Day 1842 and states that only six or eight summonses relating to relief or any other matters concerning the poor have been issued during that time to any officers of the Keighley Poor Law Union. This is his personal recollection because, as no fee is charged for this type of summonses, they are not entered in the records as punctiliously as other summonses. Paper Number: 8895/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
