Content
Folios 428-430. Letter from Charles Mott [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] to the Poor Law Commission referring to his report on the state of affairs in the Keighley Poor Law Union. The points on which he differs from Sir John Walsham [Assistant Commissioner, Poor Law Union] are in the payment of rents and the interference of the magistrates. On his visit in April he had drawn the attention of the newly elected board of guardians to the irregular practices of the previous guardians, which may have caused improvement in the procedures since then. With regard to the interference from the magistrates, the relieving officer had complained that he had received summonses issued by the magistrates' clerk, for example for the supply of goods. The allegations could be confirmed by requesting from the magistrates and their clerk a statement of all the summonses issued which related to goods or money to be supplied to the poor. He also suggests that the details of all cases where a pauper was granted a sum of 5s or over should be investigated. Paper Number: 8775/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
