Description
Content
Folios 405-406. Letter from John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], to the Poor Law Commission, acknowledging receipt of their letter dated 27 June 1842, which contained details of the number of paupers which the clerk and medical officers of the Keighley Poor Law Union considered the workhouses were capable of housing 50 paupers in Keighley Workhouse and 55 paupers in Bingley Workhouse. Walsham cannot understand how 105 paupers can be accommodated in these two poorhouses, even with the desegregation of the sexes which he found there on his inspection on 8 June 1842. He suggests that answers to the following questions should be demanded immediately. On receipt of the answers he would be able to comment more constructively. He also notes a discrepancy in that two extra beds in Bingley Poor House appear on the form in addition to the number he had counted. The questions cover the number of bedrooms available (he noted three bedrooms containing nineteen beds at Keighley and seven bedrooms plus two beds on a landing at Bingley), the maximum number of people accommodated on a single night during the previous quarter and the number on the return for the 8 June 1842, and, with reference to the medical officers' certificate, if all the paupers regardless of age, sex, state of health or marital status will continue to be lodged indiscriminately in the poorhouses. Paper Number: 8648/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
