Description
Content
Folios 400-403. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, referring to a letter of 1 June 1842 (7167B/1842) enclosing a form to be completed with the details of a collector, which is returned for approval and sanction. Enclosed is the appointment form for William Newsholme of Keighley, who also continues as a Farmer, as Collector for the Keighley District at a salary of £25 per annum. The post became vacant on the resignation of Mr McKay. Annotated: by Charles Mott [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] stating his belief that the appointments of the collector and the medical officers should be sanctioned. He brought the concern of the Commissioners regarding the medical officers' salaries to the attention of the guardians. They were worried that the fees for operations such as amputations or fractures would be greatly increased by the new medical orders. Although the amounts involved in the previous years had been trifling the guardians proposed a low salary as a trial for a year and the medical officers each agreed with this proposal. Collector's appointment to be sanctioned. Paper Number: 8508/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
