Description
Content
Folios 397-398. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, in reply to the letter of 21 June 1842 (7875B/1842) which referred to the size of the Keighley Medical District and pointed out that it slightly exceeded the limit set by medical order. The Commission instructed that this fact should be recorded in the minutes of the union and a copy of the minute [included] forwarded to the Commission. The guardians had considered the Commissioners' recommendations regarding medical officers' salaries but had decided not to increase them at present. If the salaries due to the medical officers at the end of the year, together with the fees payable under articles 10 and 12 of the General Medical Order are less than those earned previously, then an increase may be recommended. Enclosed is a minute dated 22 June 1842 stating that the proposed Keighley Medical District was the same as that formed in 1838 when the medical officers were first appointed. There had been no reason since then to consider it too large and there were no medically qualified men living in the townships of Sutton with Eastburn and Steeton which are situated near Keighley. In these circumstances the guardians recommended the proposal for the approval of the Poor Law Commission although the district is slightly larger than the limit fixed by the General Medical Order. Annotated: 7875 is annexed. Paper Number: 8465/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
