Description

Folio 10: case no 10, John Pearson, aged 20, convict; disease or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis; put on sick list 20 December 1832, died 8 February 1833.

Folios 10-11: case no 11, William Ellins, aged 22, convict; disease or hurt, hydrothorax; put on sick list 18 March 1833, died 20 March 1833. [folio 11, dissection report].

Folio 11: case no 12, Samuel Roberts, aged 22, convict; disease or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis; put on sick list 28 January 1833, died 23 March 1833.

Folios 12-13: case no 13, James Ketch, aged 33, convict; disease or hurt, cholera; put on sick list 21 November 1832, cured 7 April 1833.

Folios 13-15: case no 14, John Norris, aged 16, convict; disease or hurt, ophthalmia; put on sick list 10 March 1833, sent 10 April 1833 to hospital at Hobart Town.

Folios 16-17: Surgeon’s general remarks regarding the cholera epidemic on board the Surry between 18th and 28th November, and the influence of bad weather on the 27th November, during which time the matters had come to a crisis. Two men died on the same day and almost every individual being purged and sick, the surgeon could not find enough people to look after the sick and resolved to apply to the Commanding Officer in the Downs for assistance. The Customs ordered the Surry to hoist the quarantine flag and to hold no intercourse with the shore or shipping.
