The next case occurred on the 18th and one or two every day until 23rd and on the 26th the whole of convicts came on deck with their breakfast and stated that their suffering arose from the bad quality of the oatmeal, which the surgeon cordially concurred; as the whole of the guard and seamen had no disease amongst them although their diet was similar excepting the oatmeal, subsequently leading to the surgeon forwarded the sample of the oatmeal to Sir William Burnett and requesting Captain Kemp to issue oatmeal of better quality, that the Captain had on board, although in a very limited quantity. After which the bowel complaints diminished. The surgeon also mentioned that on the 27th a heavy gale of wind greatly aggravated the situation on board the ship, that there was scarcely a convict in the prison who was not seized with vomiting and purging and many of them had severe spasms, the surgeon stated that he never witnessed such a horror, in which two men died and one hundred apparently dying. The disease disappeared as soon as the ship get to sea, after 30th November there was no trace at all of contagion or infection and not one of the guard, seamen or persons laboured under the disease.
