Folios 5-6: Henry Philips, aged 18; convict; case number 1; sick or hurt, phthisis; put on sick list, 11 June 1838 at sea, discharged 15 June 1838.

Folios 6-10: James Wilson, aged 49; Surgeon and Superintendent; case number 2; sick or hurt, neuralgia (contracted while serving on board HMS Gloucester at Sheerness); put on sick list, 23 June 1838 at sea, pain ‘abated’ by 27 June 1838. Discharged 4 July 1838.

Folios 7-15: Jo Macdonald, aged 66; convict; case number 3; sick or hurt, asphyxia suffocationis (caused by the man throwing himself over board and being rescued); put on sick list, 23 June 1838 at sea. Discharged 23 July 1838 cured.

Folios 10-17: Henry Philips, aged 18; convict; case number 4; sick or hurt, phithisis; put on sick list, 29 June 1838 at sea. Died 31 July 1838.

Mention is also made to experiments by Dr Edwards of Paris in 1817 to determine ‘how long the living principle may continue in a state of asphyxy’ under water (this has bearing on case 3, Jo Macdonald above).
