Folios 30-33: Surgeon’s general remarks. Of 236 convicts embarked on board the Mangles, 80 were received at Woolwich, and 156 at Sheerness. Convicts wanted 'flannels which they said they had been long accustomed to wear.' Remarks concerning the outbreak of cholera on board. The Surgeon makes remarks to a symptom of scurvy 'spontaneous salivation' describing its features which he has read about, which sometimes affects, 'the Turks, and I suppose other Mahometans, in their long fast called the Ramadan or Ramazan.' This symptom was successfully treated using a mixture of nitras potassa dissolved in equal parts of vinegar and lime juice, as used by Mr Cameron in the Fergusson.
