Description

Folios 14a-16: case no. 36, Mary Ann Walker, aged 33, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, menorrhagia; put on sick list, 23 November 1838, discharged 10 January 1839.

Folios 16-17: case no. 37, Emma Walker, aged 19 months, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea [chronica?], daughter of Mary Ann Walker had a chronic bowel complaint at the Mill Bank penetentiary, had a ravenous appetite since on board but every thing she took it soon passed through, took some rhubarb and chalk mixture without any apparent benefit stomach generally rejected medicine, on the surgeon's direction took weak acidulated drink and a little arrow root with some wine in it, was insensible during the night [29 November] belly tumid state took nothing all night and at 1.30 pm. expired without struggle; put on sick list, 18 November 1838, died 29 November 1838.

Folio 17: case no. 39, Margaret Donohoe, aged 22, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list, 28 November 1838, discharged 2 December 1838.

Folios 17-18: case no. 40, Frances Hutchinson, aged 25, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cephalalgia; put on sick list, 28 November 1838, discharged 4 December 1838.

Folio 18: case no. 41, Mary Kelly, aged 17, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cephalalgia; put on sick list, 1 December 1838, discharged 4 December 1838. Folio 18: case no. 42, Elizabeth King, aged 45, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, vomitus; put on sick list, 2 December 1838, discharged 8 December 1838. Folio 18: case no. 43, Maria Hitchens, aged 20, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dolor [tateris?], pain in her left side hypochondriac region; put on sick list, 2 December 1838, discharged 8 December 1838.

Folio 19: case no. 46, Jane Jackson, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, menorrhagia; put on sick list, 4 December 1838, discharged 8 December 1838. Folio 19: case no. 47, Catherine Coddington, aged 26, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, constipation; put on sick list, 5 December 1838, discharged 7 December 1838.

Folios 20-22: case no. 48, Frances Elsom, aged 33, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cystitis; put on sick list, 5 December 1838, discharged 9 January 1839. Folio 22: case no. 49, Harriet Thorney, aged 25, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea; put on sick list, 12 December 1838, discharged 15 December 1838.

Folios 22-23: case no. 50, Agness Hutton, aged 20, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, constipation; put on sick list, 15 December 1838, discharged 20 December 1838.

Folio 23: case no. 51, Ellen Hart, aged 34, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cephalalgia; put on sick list, 17 December 1838, discharged 21 December 1838.

Folios 23-24: case no. 52, Hannah Spooner, aged 45, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 29 December 1838, discharged 12 January 1839. Folio 24: Nosological return of cases mentioned in the journal.

Folios 25-26: Surgeon's general remarks includes a list of prisoners from various gaols in England, in which two of whom Eliza Wright and Elizabeth Starkie both were sent on board the 'Planter' female convict ship for New South Wales, however these two prisoners were replaced by Ann Parker and Ann Sullivan. Also mentions that Ann [Hannah] Murphy was sent on board the 'Unite' hospital ship by order of the Home Office.
