Description

Folios 1-2: Charles Younger, aged 17, Seaman; disease or hurt, pneumonia pleuritis. Put on sick list, 30 July 1836. Discharged, 15 August 1836. Complained of pain behind the sternum or insiform cartilage, some pain on the right side, constipated bowels, tongue white etc.

Folio 2: John Stewart, aged 45, Seaman; disease or hurt, febris tertiana. Put on sick list, 1 August 1836. Discharged to Haslar Hospital by Pilot Boat, 4 August 1836. Sent to the hospital because he was infirm and the disease likely to recur, rendering him useless on board.

Folios 2-5, 9-10: William Glasspool, aged 28, Convict: diarrhoea chronica. Put on sick list, 6 August 1836. Died, 21 October 1836. Had been suffering diarrhoea and griping while in Winchester Gaol and on the Leviathan hulk. The diarrhoea continued until his death, by which time he was greatly debilitated. On folio 9 is a description of his abdominal organs examined after death.

Folio 6: Henry Watts, aged 21, Convict; disease or hurt, irritabilitas vesico urinarie. Put on sick list, 13 August 1836. Discharged, 26 August 1836. Complained of pain and irritation in the neck of the bladder and along the urethra in micturating, which was frequent.

Folio 6: Michael Daws, aged 13, Convict; disease or hurt, inflamed cervical glands. Put on sick list, 22 August 1836. Discharged, 26 August 1836. He had been suffering from the inflammation for some time and one of the inflammations had suppurated.

Folio 6: Will Pye, aged 23, Convict; disease or hurt, acne ulcerati. Put on sick list, 17 August 1836. Discharged, 6 September 1836. Suffering an eruption of tubercules over the penis, scrotum, thighs and lower abdomen.

Folio 7: Mr John Hart, Master; disease or hurt, irritabilitas ventriculi morbida cum morbo hepatico. Put on sick list, 1 September 1836. Discharged, 15 September 1836. Complained of irritability of stomach, vomiting with a gnawing pain in the left hypochondri, with a fluttering of the heart.

Folios 7-8: William Westell, aged 30, Soldier, Private of the 80th Regiment; disease or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris. Put on sick list, 4 September 1836. Discharged, 16 September 1836.

Folio 8: William Jackson, aged 16, Convict; disease or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris. Put on sick list, 6 September 1836. Discharged, 22 September 1836.

Folio 8: William Thompson, aged 19, Seaman; disease or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris. Put on sick list, 13 September 1836. Discharged, 20 September 1836.

Folio 8: Thomas White, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, ulcus labia oris. Put on sick list, 30 September 1836. Discharged, 13 October 1836. Originally put on the list on 27 August with a similar complaint but also suffered gonorrhoea, which was cured.

Folio 8: Elijah Codling, [aged 26, Convict]; disease or hurt, gastritis. Put on sick list, 11 October 1836. Discharged, 11 October 1836. Originally complained on 6 October 1836 of violent pain at the scroticulis cordis.

Folios 9-10: William Glasspool's case continued.

Folio 10: Thomas Brown, aged [not recorded], Seaman; disease or hurt, venereal disease. Put on sick list, 23 September 1836. Discharged, 7 November 1836. He had extensive ulceration and excoriation of his pubis and penis.

Folios 10-11: Patrick [Hart], Mate; disease or hurt, lues venerea. Put on sick list, 2 October 1836. Discharged, 15 November 1836. Originally put on the sick list on 26 September for excruciating pain across his temples, through his joints and across his body with inflammation of the fauces. The symptoms had been present for some weeks and were increasing, he had been using a mercurial friction and blue pill for a long time whilst exposed to wet and cold.

Folio 11: Mr John Hart, Master; disease or hurt, morbid irritability of the stomach. Put on sick list, 24 October 1836. Discharged, 7 November 1836. He had been suffering fits of vomiting and retching alternating with griping and frequent calls to stool for 2 days.

Folios 11-12: William Westall, [aged 30], Private Soldier of the 80th Regiment; disease or hurt, diarrhoea sanguinea. Put on sick list, 25 October 1836. Discharged on board the Lady Nugent Convict Ship with the detachment,21 November 1836. He had been much exposed to wet and cold weather for some time but particularly in the 24 hours before complaining. He had been in hospital three years earlier with a bowel complaint.

Folios 12-14: George Goby, aged 35, Convict; disease or hurt, gangrene of the lower extremities. Put on sick list, 23 September 1836. Died, 29 September 1836. He had an extensive erysipelatous or [erythematous] efflorescence over his leg, from his thigh to the ankle, with extensive tumefaction, pain and hardness. His leg swelled considerably. There was no post mortem examination because of the gangrenous state of the limbs and the surgeon having a cut on his finger.

Folios 14-15: George Oppin, aged [not recorded], Convict; disease or hurt, injury of the head. Put on sick list, 28 October 1836. Discharged to hospital, the prisoners being about to be sent on shore, 16 November 1836. From a fall two weeks earlier which caused him no inconvenience at the time. He discovered pus on his head and on examination the surgeon found a lacerated wound about an inch and a half long with several inches of scalp separated from the temporal and parietal bones with tumefaction of the spinal part of the occipital integument.

Folio 15: William Burgess, aged 35, Convict; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 7 November 1836. Discharged to the hospital, 16 November 1836. He suffered profuse diarrhoea of several days continuance.
