- Folios 401-403. Letter from Charles Hart, Clerk to the Liverpool Select Vestry, to Poor Law Board, acknowledging their letter of 23 September regarding the appointment of Messrs Emmett, Steele and Donlevy, as Medical Officers. He states that Emmett was appointed as a temporary Medical Officer in 'the emergency caused by the fever crisis'. He quotes from a minute in the proceedings of the Irish Relief Committee regarding the division of District 5, with Mr Gee, Medical Officer, taking the north side and Henry Emmett being appointed temporarily for the other part. Arthur Browne Steele was appointed by the General Board to succeed Mr Shaw as Medical Officer and Vaccinator of District 2. Messrs Donlevy, McLellan and Hobson were submitted to the General Board as possible candidates to fill the post of medical officer for one of the districts in Liverpool in response to an advert in the newspapers [full text given]. Dr Donlevy was elected as Medical Officer and Vaccinator of District 1. Draft notes [apparently attached to the above letter] and headed Liverpool, 'Misconduct of Public Vaccinators': Mr Gill, resigned his office subsequent to official enquiry. Messrs Steele, Emmett and Donlevy, have appealed against a decision to terminate their offices as Medical Officers. Mr Hyams, Enquiry not prosecuted for his being absent from country on the grounds of ill health. It is a draft of instructions to the Liverpool Select Vestry to write to Emmett, Steele and Donlevy stating that the termination of their contracts appears to be within the discretion of the Liverpool Select Vestry, without reference to the Board. Annotated: send a copy to the vestry. Send a copy to Mr Farnell [H B Farnell, Poor Law Inspector]. Paper Number: 38001/1852.
