Folios 285-296. [Continued from MH 12/5969/] Deposition of Bridget Melia. Charges relating to Emett, week ending 20 December 1851, 6 December 1851. Cases: 11 Michael Melia. 59 Bridget Tiernan. 60 Ann Tate. 61 Mary E Melia. 62 Mary Tiernan. 63 Catharine Tiernan. She is the wife of Michael Melia and they have two children Mary Melia, two and a half years, and Ellen Melia, four months. They do not have a child named Michael Melia. Mary was vaccinated two years ago and Ellen when she was three or four weeks old. A 'middle sized red haired man' called enquiring if the children had been vaccinated and he vaccinated Ellen. He said if the child needed any medicine she was to call at his premises in Limekiln Lane, but the vaccination did not take and the child has not been vaccinated since. At the same time he vaccinated three of the Tiernan's children and one from the Tate family. The same man called a week later with Emett, to take the 'matter'. When the 'red haired' man called he wanted to vaccinate Mary, despite the fact that she had already been vaccinated. No one called to enquire about the vaccination, except Emett and his assistant, the 'red haired man', who she has seen in the neighbourhood looking for vaccination cases. Deposition of Ann Tiernan. She is the wife of Patrick Tiernan and they have three children, Mary Tiernan, ten years, Catharine Tiernan, eight years, and Bridget Tiernan, two and a half years. The two eldest were vaccinated in Ireland and Bridget was vaccinated, by a 'red haired man', in December 1851 at the same time as Mrs Melia's and Mrs Tate's children. He then told Mrs Tiernan that the two eldest should be vaccinated again as Ireland was different. He gave each of the children a bread ticket and the vaccinated them. They took the tickets to the workhouse and obtained a loaf each. Emett called a few days later, but no one else had called. Deposition of Mary Cahill. Charges relating to Emett, week ending 13 September 1851. Cases: 212 Mary Cahill. 213 Philip Cahill. 214 Ellen Cahill. She is the wife of Philip Cahill and they have three children, Philip Cahill, 13 years, Mary Cahill, three and Margaret Cahill, one year. They had a child called Ellen Cahill who died six years ago. Philip was vaccinated in Ireland 12 years ago. Mary was vaccinated three years ago and Margaret ten months ago, both by the Ladies Charity. Several people have called looking for children to be vaccinated, but she told them she had none. Deposition of Elizabeth Roberts. Charges relating to Emett, week ending 13 September 1851, 11 October 1851, 20 December 1851, 5 July 1851. Cases: 193 Martha McCall. 194 Samuel King. 118 Patrick Kenny. 119 Ellen Kenny. 3 Ellen Doherty. 58 George Whelan. 59 Sarah Whelan. 55 Mary Roberts. All resident 1 court, Gildart Gardens. She is the wife of James Roberts. They lived in Mrs Lacy's house in Gildart Gardens. She and Mrs Lacy were the only people in the house with children. Mrs Lacy's children were John Lacy, Bridget Lacy, [Pierce Lacy], William Lacy and Margaret Lacy. Dr Hannah vaccinated her son William Roberts when he was a baby and her daughter, Margaret, was vaccinated by a 'little red haired man', but she does not know his name. No people named Kenny or Whelan lived in the house. Deposition of Jeremiah Hitchcock. He has lived in 1 court, Gildart Gardens since 18 August 1851 and there are only two houses in the court. Mrs Lacy lived in the other house and Mrs Roberts lodged with her. Since he moved in no children have been born there and as far as he knows, none vaccinated. No one named Whelan or Dougherty has lived in the other house since he has been there. Deposition of Eliza Murphy, before Farnall, 24 May 1852. She has lived at number 2 house, 5 court, Grenville Street for four or five years and is often at home as she is lame. No one named McNiff has lived in the same house. Sarah Gray and Eliza Murphy, were the only children vaccinated from her house, in May 1851 and two years ago respectively. Second copy of deposition of Eliza Murphy. Charges relating to Steele, week ending 8 November 1851. Cases: 88 Mary McNiff. 89 Bridget McNiff. Resident at house 2, court 5, Grenville Street. Deposition of Arthur Brown Steel, before Farnall, 22 May 1852. He employed Huston to vaccinate for him for about a month up to November 1851, as he had been asked to do more vaccinations. He had no other assistant then and had no assistant except Huston since March 1851. Steel has been employed by the select vestry for five years. He usually inspected the cases before verification, except when he employed Huston, when he took his declaration and the initials 'F.C.' as sufficient and signed the bills before they were initialled. He employed Graham after Huston, believing him honest and having visited cases done by Graham a successful vaccinator. He knows nothing of the McNiff case. He leaves other charges against him to the Board. Graham came to him looking for employment and was informed that his previous cases had been passed by the committee. He was employed for a month starting 19 November 1851 and Steel can verify all his cases as he personally visited. He can only verify some of [Heston's] cases. [Continued at MH 12/5969/]
