Folios 245-253. [Continued from MH 12/5969/] Letter from Donlevy to Charles Hart, Clerk to the Liverpool Select Vestry, 26 April 1852. He replies to Hart's letter that the Medical Committee did not consider his letter satisfactory. Any errors were committed by Graham, employed to assist him. Donlevy has never worn a long black coat or crepe on his hat, this describes Graham. He is also described as walking with a limp, this is well known, but Graham also has a limp. He queries the means by which information was obtained in individual cases. As a result of the present enquiry some people will not have their children vaccinated and as a result the number of small pox cases is increasing; there have been several in this district in the last month. Letter from Donlevy to Charles Hart, Clerk to the Liverpool Select Vestry, 29 March 1852. With reference to the incorrect vaccination returns he states that any inaccuracies or errors were caused by the person he occasionally employed to assist him. He expresses his regrets and offers to resign his post of vaccinator. Annotated, 8 April 1852: to be recorded in the minutes and reply sent that the evidence applies to Donlevy personally and this note is not considered to be satisfactory. Farnall. Third copy of Esther Slade's deposition, relating to week ending 29 November 1851] Deposition of Esther Morris, relating to week ending 29 November 1851. Case: 103 Mary Morris. She is the wife of Thomas Morris and lodged with Esther Slade. At the end of November 1851 she asked the parish doctor, who was attending a patient in the court, if her daughter, Mary Morris, aged 11, should be vaccinated. The doctor said she should be vaccinated every seven years. He vaccinated the girl, but it did not take, and she thought no more of it. The doctor did not call again and she was later told that his name was Donlevy. No one, except Ollis, had subsequently called to enquire if the vaccination had taken effect. Deposition of Mary Deakin, relating to week ending 24 October 1851. Case: 35 Mary Deakin. She is the wife of Isaac Deakin, and they have one child, Sarah Deakin. When the child was six weeks old she took her, with a friend, Mrs Ashcroft, and her child, to the dispensary in Vauxhall Road to be vaccinated by Dr Callan. However they refused to have their children vaccinated then as they did not want to have the 'matter' from the children who were there. They returned some days later and both children were vaccinated by Dr Callan. A week or ten days later Dr Callan and another gentleman called on her and Mrs Ashcroft. They took 'matter' from both children. This is the only time that her daughter has been vaccinated, although enquiries are frequently made seeking children to vaccinate. No one has subsequently made any enquiries about the effect of the vaccination or the way it had been done. Third copy of Emily Clarke's deposition, relating to week ending 29 October 1851. Deposition of Mary Whitlow, relating to week ending 24 October 1851. Cases: 2 Eliza Whitlow. 12 Eliza Whitlow. She is the wife of Joseph Whitlow and they have seven children. All her children were vaccinated as infants, the three youngest through the Ladies Charity, the others she paid for. She has a certificate from the Ladies Charity given after the 'matter' was taken from the children, date 6 August. About six weeks after the vaccination the children developed some sort of disease. She initially went to Dr Arnold and then Dr Horrock, but was unable to afford the medicine they recommended. She then applied to Mr Blewer, Relieving Officer, who gave her a note to take to Donlevy at his premises in Bostock Street. He prescribed a powder, which she obtained from the Burlington Street Dispensary. When she saw him she had the child with her and he enquired if it had been vaccinated and she replied yes. He never vaccinated the child. She has seen people in her street enquiring for children to vaccinate. No one, apart from Ollis, has enquired if her children have been vaccinated or if it had taken effect. [Continued at MH 12/5969/]
