Description
Content
Folio 46. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Thomas Martyn, Churchwarden, and John Allen, Overseer, of Veryan, near Tregony. They acknowledge receipt of their letter of the 22 April 1835 and enclose a circular [not included], giving recommendations on granting relief, which should be vigorously enforced. They give specific advice on granting relief to able bodied paupers and sons of small farmers, who refuse to maintain them. Since these measures will reduce pauperism in their parish, they should delay building a workhouse until a Poor Law Commissioner has visited their county. They warn that payment of rent for able bodied people must be stopped immediately, but may be continued for a time for aged or infirm paupers. After a temporary rise in occasional relief, this will lead to a saving. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
