Description

Folio 7: 23 April 1820; performed divine service, inspected the convicts found them clean in their person and their clothes except six, issued ½ pint of wine to each with the exception of those six who were not clean.

Folio 7: 24 April 1820; fumigated the prison, guard room and sailors berths with nitre and sulphuric acid.

Folio 7: 25 April 1820; at 5 am division of convicts to bath, every man was made to strip and get into it, they had bucket of water thrown over them which is to be done every morning while the warm weather continues.

Folios 7-8: 26 April 1820; barber employed cutting hair, it being a general order that every man should have his hair cut short before Sunday, issued ¼ lb of mustard.

Folio 8: 27 April 1820; light wind Island of Palma about 15 miles distant.

Folio 8: 28 April 1820; bedding on deck, one division admitted to bath, prison cleaned, convicts washing clothes as usual, opened cask of pease contains 5 bushels.

Folio 8: 29 April 1820; prison cleaned and examined by the 1st mate, carpenter, a party of soldier and myself, found a few knives, mustered them examining their irons and found all correct, fumigated the ship with vapour of tar.

Folios 8-9: 30 April 1820; performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convict except Charles Goodlack for being filthy.

Folio 9: 1 May 1820; all the usual routine, boys have free access on deck, commenced the issue of lime juice.

Folio 9: 2 May 1820; all the usual routine, spoke to the ship Wood Ford bound to Madras.

Folio 9: 3-7 May 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess and 6 lbs of soap, opened cask of pork, inspected the convicts and found them all clean.

Folio 10: 8-17 May 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess, opened cask of pork, beef, flour and butter.

Folio 11: 18-27 May 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess and 35 lbs of soap, opened cask of beef, pork, oatmeal, pease.

Folio 12: 28 May 1820; a complaint from the guard that the convicts had been abusive to the centinel [sentinel] during the night and they had also been very noise, confined them below for punishment and stop give them the usual Sunday’s allowance of wine.

Folio 12: 29 May 1820; convicts still kept below as punishment in the forenoon, release them on deck as usual in the afternoon.

Folio 12: 30-31 May 1820; usual routine, including a summary report for May with numerical abstract and general remarks of routine duties on the ship.

Folios 13-14: 1-10 June 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess and 35 lbs of soap, opened cask of pork, beef, and rum, spoke to the ship David Scott from England to Bengal on the 4th.

Folio 14: 11-19 June 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess, opened cask of beef, vinegar, flour, pease, and sugar, mustered and inspected the convicts and them all clean, carpenter employed caulking the prison deck.

Folio 15: 20-25 June 1820; usual routine, fumigated the ship performed divine service and issued ½ pint of wine to each convicts, issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess, opened cask of beef, raisins, suet and pork.

Folio 15: 26 June 1820: strong breeze from NNE fine weather, in the night Wm [William] Sheldon convicts was detected robbing Wm [William] Schofield, he has suspected of having committed depaedations [depredations] below and is a very bad character, punished him with 24 lashes over the posteriors.

Folio 15: 27-28 June 1820: instant heavy rain in the night with thunder and lightning from all quarters, issued one gill of wine to each convict, 6 lbs of soap and ¼ lb of mustard, opened cask of mustard and cocoa.

Folio 16: 29-30 June 1820: strong breeze and severe gale in the night heavy rain, convicts on deck when fine weather and attended the usual routine.

Folios 16-17: 1-4 July 1820: moderate weather, performed divine service and all the usual duties.

Folios 17-18: 5-12 July 1820: weather getting cold and wet convicts attended all the usual duties as the weather permitted, prison wet from the water come down the hatchways also from the privy the pipe of the cistern being broken, and carpenter endeavouring to repair it and found that it very much out of repair as the lead being torn off from the convicts having thrust in stuks.

Folio 18: 13-21 July 1820: the weather improving but the prison and hospital wet and dirty from the water having overflowed the privies, carpenters employed repairing them, punished Wm Moore convict boy with 12 lashes over the posteriors for having found in the men's prison. Relieved John Cashbold from both his irons for his uniform good conduct as boatswain mate and his attention in keeping the prison clean, on the 17th at 1 am made the Island of St Pauls.

Folios 19-20: 22-31 July 1820: strong gale with heavy rain convicts attended the usual duties as the weather permitted. Summary of report for July with numerical abstract and general remark of routine duties on the ship.

Folio 20: 1-5 August 1820; strong gale continues and gradually decreased to moderate breeze, convicts attended the usual duties as the weather permitted.

Folio 21: 6-17 August 1820; convicts attended all the usual duties, at 2:30 pm on the 7th saw the coast of New Holland to the westward of Cape Otway, on the 8th running through Bass straits at 8 am saw Wilsons Promontory and at 9 am Curtis Island, on the 9th close to Furneaux Island, and on 16th close to the entrance of Port Jackson anchored at Sydney Cove at 8 am Capt. Piper naval officer came on board delivered to him one bag of dispatches for the Governor and two packets also a boy for J T Bigge esq, relieved the irons off the convicts, on 17th convicts and guard supplied with fresh provisions.

Folios 22-23: 23-29 August 1820; on 23rd Wm Sheldon, convict, died suddenly of apoplexy, mustered convicts by Mr Campbell secretary and asked each convict,s if they have any compliant to make in which all expressed themselves satisfied, convicts were landed at daylight on 29th and inspected by Governor MacQuarrie and asked them if they had any complaint to make of their treatment on board, all were satisfied.Summary of report for August with numerical abstract and general remarks and signed Patrick Hill, surgeon and superintendent.

Folio 23: case no 1;Samuel Richards, convict; sick or hurt, diarrhoea complains of severe griping pain in the bowels and watery stools; taken ill on 31 March 1820, discharged 3 April 1820.

Folio 23: case nos 2-4; Michael Mack, Francis Wright and Joshua Oulds, boy convicts; sick or hurt, psora; taken ill on 1 April 1820, discharged 8 April 1820.
