Description

Folios 1-2: Blank.

Folio 3: 25 February 1820; Joined the ship and reported myself at Captain Young's office.

Folio 3: 9 March 1820; embarked the guard, consisting of 31 men of the 48th Regiment commanded by Captain Snow of 67th Regiment including five women and five children.

Folio 3: 10 March 1820; opened a cask of rum no.1 contain 67 gallon, oatmeal 7 bush 4 gallons, pease 3 bush 4 gallons, vinegar no. 1 contain 31 gallons.

Folio 3: 12 March 1820; butter no.772 49 lbs, cheese 95 lbs.

Folio 3: 15 March 1820; embarked J Richardson a free settler with his wife and 2 children for a passage to New South Wales.

Folio 3: 18 March 1820; opened a cask of sugar for tea.

Folio 3: 21 March 1820; sailed from Deptford to Gravesend.

Folio 3: 22 March 1820; sailed from Gravesend to the Nore.

Folio 3: 23 March 1820; sailed from the Nore to the Downs, opened cask of pork no. 1288 contains 52 pieces.

Folio 3: 24 March 1820; sailing down Channel.

Folio 3: 25 March 1820; opened cask of beef no 2 contains 26 pieces, flour no 54 contains 336 lbs, raisins no 20 contains 112 lbs, suet no 28 contains 120 lbs, and pease 3 bush 4 Galls.

Folio 3: 26 March 1820; arrived at the Motherbank, reported the arrival to Lt. Cheeseman agent for transport, went with him on board the Leviathan hulk and agreed to receive the convicts on the 28th.

Folio 3: 27 March 1820; reported the arrival at the Admiral and General's office in the afternoon inspected 100 convicts on board the Leviathan.

Folios 3-4: 28 March 1820; ship came into Spithead, in the morning inspected 60 convicts on board the Laurel, at 1 pm. Received 160 convicts on board twenty are boys under 18 years of age, who have a separated prison, divided them into mess of six. Their clothing consisting of one worsted frock, one shirt, one pair of trousers, one pair of stocking, one handkerchief, one hat and one pair of shoes, mustered them below at sunset.

Folio 4: 29 March 1820; lighted the awing and swinging stoves, convicts had a free access on deck, formed them into 4 divisions each one will be clean the prison in rotation.

Folio 4: 30 March 1820; since embarkation several of the soldiers affected with slight catarrhal, at present there two in the sick list with inflamed throat.

Folio 4: 31 March 1820; issued to every 4 men a prayer book, to every eight men a testament and a bible to every sixteen, mustered and inspected 16 men at a time, cautioning them to beware of taking off their irons, received from the master for use in the hospital 3 sauce pans, 1 tea kettle, 6 drinking mugs, 2 spitting pots, 2 bed pans, and 2 urinals.

Folio 4: 1 April 1820; issued 25 lbs of soap to the convicts, examined the irons by the first mate and found John Jones the carpenter has false rivets, he is a very desperate and abandoned character at Newgate, having been an orderly in the hulks every indulgence was shown to him here, he was permitted to sit on the quarter deck with his wife, he acknowledge that his intention was to escape, put additional irons on him and handcuffed.

Folio 4: 2 April 1820; John Green was sent back to the hulk per order of J Capper Esq, received Samuel Powell in lieu of him, Antonio Lewis was insolent and disobedient to a centinel [sentinel], removed handcuffs off Jones during the night.

Folios 4-5: 3 April 1820; mustered convicts on deck striped and tied up Antonio Lewis for flogging but forgave him being the first offence, took occasion to caution the rest respecting their conduct to soldiers, issued to each convict one linen shirt marked with his number and division, received from the master for the use of the hospital 6 pair of sheet, 6 flannel trousers, 6 towels, 6 bolster cases, 6 flannel waistcoats and 6 night caps, three of the boys affected with psora.

Folio 5: 4 April 1820; issued 1 pair of deck trousers to each convict marked with number and division.

Folio 5: 5 April 1820; convicts shaved, and opened cask of pease contain 10 bushels.

Folio 5: 6 April 1820; completed our water, relieved Jones from the handcuffs.

Folio 5: 7 April 1820; fine weather convicts on deck, and mustered convicts below at 6pm.

Folio 5: 8 April 1820; the boys that were affected with psora are now well.

Folio 5: 9 April 1820; received from Lt. Cheeseman two bags of dispatches one for governor MacQuarrie and the other for J T Bigge Esq. Also a packet for the governor, the master received sailing orders.

Folio 5: 10 April 1820; convicts not allowed on deck owing to the weather, opened cask of flour 336 lbs, oatmeal 7 bush 4 galls, and butter no. 771 contains 73 lbs.

Folio 5: 11 April 1820; Thomas Nicholls convict was insolent and disobedient to the centinel [sentinel] and punished with 12 lashes.

Folios 5-6: 12 April 1820; got under weigh and at 4 pm Anchored off south Yarmouth Isle of Wight. (Including in this entry is a list of general regulations).

Folio 6: 13 April 1820; at 10 am got underweigh and came through the Needles, received in charge from the master the chest of medical comforts, containing rice 22lbs, sago 20 lbs, barley 22 lbs, chocolate 10 lbs, allspice 6 lbs, pepper 3 lbs. Admitted into hospital, Samuel Powell, convict, with cynanche tonsillaris and James Thornton with erysipelas.

Folio 6: 14-15 April 1820; opened of butter no. 453 contains 67 lbs, many of the convicts seasick prison very dirty, issued 35 lbs of soap to convicts.

Folio 6: 16 April 1820; performed divine service, took irons off the following convicts, John Cashbolt and Benjamin Cordle boatswains mates, Matthias Maher, R Turner, ? Nurses, B Lanagan, Thomas Smith, and Thomas Butler cooks.

Folio 6: 17 April 1820; appointed James Moore and James Hamilton convicts to teach the boys, 13 of them can read tolerably well, procured a spelling book for the other 7, and took irons off James Moore and James Hamilton.

Folio 7: 18 April 1820; issued ¼ lb of mustard to each mess, boys employed at forenoon at their lessons reading New Testament.

Folio 7: 19-21 April 1820; boys at their lessons, and barbers employed cutting hair, opened casks of pork and beef, and convicts washed their clothes.

Folio 7: 22 April 1820; Island of Port Saint in sight.
