Description

Folio 61: 13 September 1819, James Rodgers, no sleep since last report, is a little easier, without any pain, the vomiting has returned but at longer intervals. James Smith complains with cough and sore throat. Edward McFaden complains of having had griping during the night. John McCarty and Brownly, mouth and gums better. Thomas Birmingham complains of flatus and pain about the precordia.

Folio 62: 13 September 1819, James Rodgers has had frequent vomiting again of a dark brownish fluid, appears decreasing in strength. At 5 pm in a low comatose state with quick breathing and pulse imperceptible at the wrist, died at 9 pm, gradually decreasing in strength, without a struggle. Note that James Rodgers came from County Meath and had been ill for a number of days before reporting to the Surgeon. Edmond Doyle complains of headache, slight heat of skin, b[owels] open, debility.

Folio 62: 14 September 1819, clear Cape Otway and King’s Island at the entrance of Bass Strait. At 5 am Cornelius Ring suddenly attacked with violent spasms in the stomach after drinking a little cold water. At 8 am, the body of James Rodgers was committed to the deep with the usual ceremonies. Hinds complains of a little nausea at stomach, cough rather abated. Patrick Cunningham much better, perspired freely, b[owels] not free, headache abated. Peter Levins and James Smith, cough and headache abated, appetite impaired. Patrick Gogarty complains with griping. Patrick McMahon, Andrew May and Michael Dineen better, appetite weak. Darby Shanaghan, ulcer quite healed, complains with frequent cough and impaired appetite.

Folio 63: 14 September 1819, Peter Murphy, cough much abated, b[owels] free, complains of impaired appetite and debility. John Sweeny continues to improve, Walter Sweeny, debility and pain about the precordia. William Underwood complains of debility and impaired appetite. John Dean, an old man, complains of severe pain in the small of his back, headache, [anorexia], debility. Edward McFaden, griping gone, slept well, complains with slight headache, slight griping returned at 12, with loose stool. At 6 pm, Patrick Blake and John McLochlan, cough and slight headache. Bernard Corcoran has slight protrusion of the anus with tenesmus. Music and dancing on deck in the evening. Note that there have been very heavy dews which may account for the colds and headaches among the men.

Folio 63: 15 September 1819, Patrick Blake, cough and headache abated, Edward McFaden and Cavanagh, b[owels] easy, t[ongue] clean, appetite impaired. James Smith rested badly from a pain under his left breast and headache, which is now easier. Michael Dineen had slight tenesmus in the night, no griping or purging, appetite weak. Peter Levins, headache and cough abated, perspires much. Peter Murphy better, coughs less, no pain, perspires rather profusely. George Huston, a weakly man, complains of headache and debility.

Folio 64: 15 September 1819, Patrick Gogarty has had purging and slight griping, Underwood has slight purging still, no griping. Patrick McManus, b[owels] rather bound, better in other respects. Cornelius Ring much better, has a sense of pain and weakness about the precordia, b[owels] open. Patrick Connel and Jonathan McLuchlan, complain with cough, b[owels] open. Patrick Grimes complains with slight headache and skin rather hot. Jonathan Dean, Andrew May, Thomas Birmingham and James Drum, all improve. Bernard Corcoran, still a little tenesmus and protrusion of the rectum. Terence McManus improves. Redmond [Condon] and Oliver Richards complain with slight headache and heat of skin. John Gorman complains with cough and slight pain in his chest, p[ulse] and skin natural.

Folio 64: 16 September 1819, Andrew Hinds better, still complains of frequent cough and general flying pains about his sides and chest. Patrick Blake complains of headache and troublesome cough during the night. John McLuchlan complains of pains in his back and sides. Martin Connell complains of headache and cough. Andrew May and Michael Dineen quite easy.

Folio 65: 16 September 1819, Peter Levins, cough and headache nearly gone, b[owels] free, perspires much. Patrick Gogarty and James Drum, slight griping and purging returns. Bernard Corcoran has a return of tenesmus and griping, Edward McFaden, the same. Patrick Connel complains of slight headache and cough. Jonathan O’Hara was suddenly seized with violent spasms in the stomach which appear to have been produced by drinking vinegar and water. Spasms removed leaving a slight headache and a sense of fullness.

Folio 65: 17 September 1819, Jonathan Dean, Bernard Rowe and Terence McManus all better, slept pretty well, cough abated. Peter Levins much better, headache and cough abated. Oliver Richards, headache gone, cough better. William Underwood, purging abated, b[owels] easy at present. James Smith has a pain in his left breast, cough less, b[owels] regular, complains of debility.

Folio 66: 17 September, Jonathan Brownly, mouth better, Tully the same, Peter Murphy, cough easier. Bernard Corcoran, b[owels] much easier, tinismus [tenesmus] abated, complains of debility, perspires much. Andrew Hinds says he is much better, complains of debility, t[ongue] clean, b[owels] open. Joseph Purcell has haemorrhoids, b[owels] not free, slight tenesmus. John Irvin complains of slight headache and debility, gums still spongy. Thomas Birmingham improves, slight headache at times. Patrick Connell and Jonathan McLoghlan cough better. James Gibson has bubonocele in the right side, has had a truss applied.

Folio 66: 18 September 1819, Cape Howe in sight, James Smith, cough and pains in his side abated. Bernard Corcoran better, Jonathan Gorman free from headache and pain in his breast, complains of debility. Terence McManus, cough frequent, strength and appetite better. Patrick Tully and Brownly improve. James Drum has slight return of griping and purging.

Folio 67: 18 September 1819, Andrew Hinds complains with severe cough and general pains in his body and limbs, expectoration appears free. Says he sleeps badly from the cough and feels weak.

Folio 67: 19 September 1819, running along the land, Cape Dromedary in sight. Edward McFaden and James Drum, slight griping and purging returned. Patrick Blake, Cornelius Ring and Peter Murphy, cough rather abated, Patrick McMahon, cough and dyspnea in the night. William Underwood, still slight diarrhoea, better in other respects. Bernard Corcoran has still loose stools with protrusion and soreness of the rectum. Thomas Barry, passed blood with every motion without the least pain and bleeding from his gums which are spongy. Andrew Hinds rested badly from the frequent cough, expectoration appears free, complains of general pains and soreness in his chest, back and loins. William Sweeny complains with headache and cough. [At 4 pm] frequent bilious vomiting with cough, headache abated.
