Description

Folio 42: 8 August 1819, Ring is now free from the spasmodic affection, complains of debility. Underwood and Gibson much improved. Bryan and Thomas Cunningham, pains are much abated. John Campbell, free from the pain in the iliac region, complains of a difficulty and pain in making water. Patrick McMahon improves a little, also John Sweeny.

Folio 42: 9 August 1819, Bryan Cunningham, pains quite abated, debility and impairment of appetite. Thomas Cunningham, the pains are much abated and become irregular and wandering. Sweeny and Patrick McMahon, old men, are improving much. Owen Dooner, headache and pain in his chest with frequent cough. Jonathan Maginnis’ mouth very sore amounting to ptyalism, probably from the mercurial friction as well as the scorbutic taint, scrotum and testis is still much thickened and enlarged. Bernard Corcoran complains of being constipated.

Folio 43: 9 August 1819, Ring and Campbell much better.

Folio 43: 10 August 1819, Cornelius Ring improves gradually. Maginnis had griping and purging in the night. Jonathan Moran has slight symptoms of scurvy, Jonathan Irvin quite free from it, health good.

Folio 43: 11 August 1819, Jonathan Campbell, Jonathan Sweeny and Jonathan McMahon, old men, are all much improved in health and spirits. John Maginnis, mouth very sore apparently from the mercurial friction, scrotum and testis much less swelled and painful, pains in his limbs quite gone. Bryan Cunningham quite free from complaint. Thomas Cosgrove is pretty free from the pains in his limbs and complains of passed a bad night from frequent cough and pain in his chest. Jonathan Moran, much soreness in his gums and general debility.

Folio 44: 12 August 1819, McMahon, Sweeny and Jonathan Campbell, all old men, are improving in every respect. Jeremiah Buckly complains of griping, b[owels] costive. Hinds has had griping and vomiting in the night, nausea and griping continues. Jonathan Maginnis, mouth still sore complains of great debility. William Underwood was freely purged previous night and has no complaint but debility.

Folio 44: 13 August 1819, Gogarty improving generally, John Sweeny and Patrick McMahon improving in health and strength, William Underwood complains of nothing but debility and want of appetite. Jonathan Maginnis, mouth very sore, nausea and vomiting. James Rice, mouth nearly well, has had frequent vomiting. Carr’s throat nearly well, mouth still slightly sore, general health improved. Thomas Cosgrove, cough and pain in his chest has returned, pains in his extremities gone. Darby Shanaghan, the ulcer on his leg now looks clean, [but indolent].

Folio 44a: 13 August 1819, Rice has been quite easy in his bowels, Maginnis has had purging again.

Folio 44a: 14 August 1819, Sweeny improved in every respect, McMahon and John Campbell also improve. Jonathan Maginnis had griping and purging previous night, rested well, no complaint but soreness in his mouth. Gogarty has a little griping, no purging. Jonathan Moran nearly free from the scorbutic taint.

Folio 44a: 15 August 1819, James Rice had his motions in the night, griping gone, costive. McMahon, Jonathan Campbell and Jonathan Sweeny, old men, improve in health and strength. Jonathan Maginnis, mouth very sore, throat also, with difficult deglutition. Hinds, general pains, as severe at times as they have ever been, particularly along the tibia where there appears no inequality. John Smith has had frequent nausea and headache, b[owels] regular, t[ongue] clean.

Folio 45: 16 August 1819, Gogarty, b[owels] quite easy, general strength improving, but the wandering pains are still troublesome. Hinds improves, Carr’s throat heals kindly, general health much improved. Jonathan Campbell and Jonathan Sweeny continue to improve. Thomas Cosgrove, cough, no pain except on coughing. John Maginnis’ mouth rather better, b[owels] rather bound. Rice free from griping, general health improving. William Underwood much improved in health and appearance. Edward Kelly complains with costive bowels. George Huston complains of severe shooting pains in his lower extremities. Four of the old men to have chocolate for breakfast, the other sick to have tea.

Folio 45: 17 August 1819, Maginnis improves a little, mouth better, pains entirely abated, scrotum and testis nearly reduced to their natural size. Michael Moran has numerous small boils and costive bowels. James Rice continues better, b[owels] easy and regular, mouth still slightly sore. Andrew Hinds complains with pains in his chest and frequent cough. Jonathan Campbell, Jonathan Sweeny and McMahon continue to improve a little.

Folio 46: 17 August 1819, Thomas Cosgrove, frequent hard cough and slight pain in his chest on coughing, pains in his limbs gone. John Moran improves in strength, scorbutic appearance entirely gone. William Underwood improves, b[owels] becoming regular, appetite and strength better. Gogarty improves in strength, the pains in his limbs entirely gone, slight pain in his left breast and side. Carr complains with griping and frequent inclination for stool.

Folio 46: 18 August 1819, Jonathan Maginnis improves a little, mouth still very sore. James Rice improves gradually, Campbell, McMahon and Sweeny, old men, all continue in better health and spirits. Thomas Cosgrove, troublesome cough with difficult expectoration. Gogarty improves, Carr’s throat nearly healed, no pain or difficulty in swallowing.

Folio 46: 19 August 1819, Maginnis’ mouth still very sore, James Rice continues to improve. Thomas Cosgrove, frequent teasing dry cough with pain in his chest on coughing.

Folio 47: 19 August 1819, John Coyle and John Killen complain with slight headache, cough and pain in their chests. Darby Shanaghan, ulcer on his leg now clean and healing kindly. Andrew Hinds, severe pains in his breast and limbs.

Folio 47: 20 August 1819, Rice improves gradually, McMahon, Sweeny and Campbell, continue better, Underwood, b[owels] still bound. Michael Torpey has had an ulceration in his right tonsil for some time for which he has been using various astringent [gargles] and repeated cathartics without and disposition to heal. Jonathan Millikin [Milligan] and Michael Moran complain with pectoral affections, b[owels] regular. Hinds complains of violent general pains. James [Clement], Guard, complains of having had frequent bloody stools with tormina and tenesmus.

Folio 47: 21 August 1819, James [Clement] passed a good night no sign of blood in his stools, griping returns at times. Jonathan Maginnis much better, Carr continues to improve slowly. Andrew Hinds continues to [complain?] severely, though he has a clear tongue, skin moist, b[owels] regular. Patrick McMahon has had slight griping.

Folio 48: 21 August, Jonathan Campbell and Jonathan Sweeny continue to improve, Rice also. Michael Moran and Jonathan Milligan with catarrhal affections much better. At 4 pm saw the island of St Pauls. Hinds complains of having violent pain under his left breast with dyspnea.
