Description

Folio 35: 29 July 1819, Huston and Gogarty continue to improve, Fallon quite free form griping. Thomas Burns improves fast. William Underwood, headache, sore throat and obstinate constipation. John Burns the previous evening appeared very restless approaching to incoherency, with pyrexia and thirst, had a restless raving night, appears still inclined to a comatose state. 10 am appears a little revived, to have a blister applied to each leg. At 12 had been in a sound sleep but became restless and incoherent. James Gibson, severe griping and purging.

Folio 35: 30 July 1819, Rice’s mouth continues very sore, Thomas Burns, Huston and Gogarty continue to improve. Edward Reilly and Thomas Knox, costive bowels. McMahon improves.

Folio 36: 30 July 1819, John Burns slept well until 4 when he became restless again. Ate a little rice pudding in the afternoon, a blister applied to his head was giving a foul discharge which he did not seem to notice, still incoherent, low muttering delirium.

Folio 36: 31 July 1819, John Burns weaker this morning, passed a quiet night with low muttering delirium at intervals but did not sleep. Gums appear swollen but not at all tainted with the mercurial, [odour], intermittent. Thomas Burns, George Huston, Gogarty and Patrick McMahon all improved.

Folio 37: 31 July 1819, John Dockery, severe griping during the night, particularly in the left [iliac] region. Daniel Byrne complained of headache and constipated bowels. John Burns remains in much the same state, apparently weaker.

Folio 37: 1 August 1819, John Burns remains very low, pulse very feeble at the wrist, enema administered. James Gibson and John Dockery are free from the bowel complaints. Daniel Byrne and John Campbell, headache and constipated bowels. Hinds and Carr improve a little.

Folio 38: 1 August 1819, Burns remains asleep or in a low delirium all day and falls asleep at 11 covered with a fine perspiration. Given rice water with a glass of wine as an enema in the afternoon.

Folio 38: 2 August 1819, John Burns became quite sensible during the night but relapsed into low delirium at 7 am, enema administered with no result, and at 12:30 he died peacefully. Had been in low spirits and desponding since leaving his family and wife and three small children. Two beds he had used and three pillows thrown overboard, also a hospital nightcap and a duck frock which had got soiled. Jonathan Campbell, quite well in his bowels but complains of debility. At 4 pm John Burns committed to the deep.

Folio 38: 3 August 1819, Thomas Elliott, Guard, headache, b[owels] costive. Owen McBride, headache and pain in his back and limbs, t[ongue] clean, pulse and skin moderate. John McGinnis, chronic rheumatic pains in his ancles [ankles] with much debility. Hinds improves much.

Folio 39: 3 August 1819, Patrick Gogarty improves much in general health but complains of severe pains in his bones. James Rice, Thomas Burns improving. Patrick McMahon the same. John Sweeny complains of much debility. Peter Levins, headache, frequent nausea, b[owels] bound. Michael Torpy [Torpey], complains with sore throat. John Gorman, Thomas Cunningham and William Moran, pain in the breast and frequent cough. Darby Shanaghan, ulcer looks clean and healing, mouth has been kept gently sore, the other sores are entirely healed.

Folio 39: 4 August 1819, John Campbell complains of debility, Michael Torpey's throat rather better. John MGinnis [McGinnis or Maginnis], pains severe, b[owels] free, to wear a flannel shirt next his skin. Owen McBride free from any complaint today. John Irvin is of a dull scorbutic habit, his gums are still spongy independent of his having taken the citric acid. Cornelius Ring still complains of a sense of weight about the precordia and irregularity in his bowels.

Folio 40: 5 August 1819, John McGinnis improves in every respect. Patrick Grimes, griping and purging. Owen McBride complains of a sense of weight and oppression about the precordia with want of appetite. Bryan Cunningham, severe headache, pain in his back and limbs, much easier at 3 pm, b[owels] freely open, complains only of the pain in the small of his back.

Folio 40: 6 August 1819, James Gibson had severe vomiting at 9 the previous night, with a sense of weight and oppression about the precordia, pain and uneasiness now much abated. Bryan Cunningham, free from any pain and headache except the pain in the small of his back. Thomas Cosgrove [or] Cunningham has had a pectoral complaint for some days past, the pain has moved from his breast to his right shoulder and arm, has been taking laxative and the [antimonial and saline] medicine, the pain continues severe. Cornelius Ring has had a violent spasm about the umbilicus most of the night, which continues severe. John Mulligan costive. Gogarty, Carr and Hinds improve in every respect. McGinnis, the scrotum and testis evidently decreasing in size and less painful, pains in his limbs also abating.

Folio 41: 6 August 1819, McGrouthen has had frequent nausea and vomiting every morning for some time back. Underwood is of an indolent costive habit. Cunningham and Cosgrove much less pains at 6 pm.

Folio 41: 7 August 1819, Cornelius Ring had risen in the night and taken a glass of cold water which produced violent spasms in the stomach and umbilical region, given half a glass of warm negus which entirely removed the spasms. William Underwood had a cathartic pill the previous night, b[owels] free, complains of much debility and impaired appetite. Bryan Cunningham and Cosgrove much better from the pains. Maginnis [McGinnis], the swelling and pain in his testis much abated, b[owels] regular, pains in his shoulders and back much abated. Irvin’s gums beginning to be quite firm and healing, general health and appearance much improved. Gogarty complains of frequent nausea and vomiting, particularly after the cinchona [quinine], which is now omitted, dull shooting pain in his back and shoulders. James Rice, mouth still slightly sore, general health improving, venereal symptoms totally disappeared. Thomas Burns now free from complaint, general health good. John Campbell, an indolent old man, frequently constipated, complained this morning with violent spasmodic pain in the left iliac region, says his belly is bound. At 6 pm is quite free from pain but has had no stool.
