Folio 17: 24 June 1819, lemon juice and sugar issued.
Folio 17: 25 June 1819, temperature 82 degrees Fahrenheit between decks but no unpleasant smells except near the water closets which are constantly blocking because of the small diameter of lead pipes, about ¾ inch. The piping has been taken apart three times because of blockages. Suggests, for the consideration of the Navy Board, that in future such ships should be equipped with piping of an increased diameter.
Folio 17 and 18: 25 June 1819, Morrison, Soldier, suppression of urine with much pain in the small of the back in the region of the bladder and along the penis, symptoms increasing in spite of strong cathartic and immersion of the legs in warm water. Catheters and bougies tried but obstructed about the prostate gland producing violent spasms and protrusion of the rectum. Hot baths also tried with no relief from symptoms. Patient consents for surgeon to puncture the bladder above the symphysis pubis if symptoms do not improve but passes a little water before the procedure is attempted.
Folio 18: 26 June 1819, Philip Reillys cathartic has not operated. Morrison slept well, protrusion of the rectum reduced, still passing urine in a small stream with heat. Infusion of linseed for common drink. Bryan Grehan, pain all about the praecordia and irregularity in bowels. John Dunn, severe constipation, languor and headache. John Campbell constipated again.
Folio 18: 27 June 1819, Morrison gradually improving. Andrew Gibney, an old man, general languor and debility, bowels costive. Thomas Birmingham, constipation. Healy feels quite recovered.
Folio 19: 28 June, Andrew Hinds, mouth very sore, venereal symptoms disappearing, bowels costive. Daniel Stewart, pain in his chest, dyspnoea and cough, no fever. Thomas Burns, slight [injurial] swelling and a small blotch on the glans penis which he has observed for some weeks.
Folio 19: 29 June 1819, John Connell, constipated bowels and numerous boils. Michael Donnelly, pain about the praecordia, headache and want of appetite. Michael Doud, slight headache, constipation and general debility. John Buckly, an old infirm man, griping and frequent purging, with much general debility. Walter Sweeny, griping, bowels bound.
Folio 20: 30 June 1819, Hinds mouth still sore, general headache and swelled face, to inhale steam of warm vinegar frequently. Edward McFaden, numerous boils. Michael Torpy, inflamed sore throat and constipated bowels. John English has an abscess in the back of his leg.
Folio 20: 1 July 1819, crossed the equator at 10 previous night. Still about seven [cases of] small sores remaining which are generally better and healing, dressed simply every morning. John Buckly, quite well of the bowel complaint, complains of debility and impaired appetite. Hinds has less headache and the ulceration on the penis disappeared, ardor urina gone. Michael Daly, rheumatic pain in his right shoulder and arm. John McGiven, griping and irregular, rather constipated bowels. Given cathartic, well at 6 pm. Morrison, ardor urina etc abating, appetite returning.
Folio 21: 2 July 1819, Sergeant Murphy, Guard, sore throat and difficult deglutition, swelling of the sub maxillary glands. Mrs [Sergeant] Murphy, costive. Andrew Gibney, an old man, severe griping about the umbilicus, with frequent nausea and headache, t[ongue] white, with thirst.
Folio 21: 3 July 1819, the sores healing except Darby Shanaghan, who has an ill conditioned ulcer on the left inner ankle. Buckly and Gibney, the two old men, still complain of debility.
Folio 22: 4 July 1819, all decks pretty dry except forward in the hospital from the heavy seas and the working of the bowsprit. George Huston, sore throat and difficult deglutition. Buckly and Gibney, still complain of debility, appetite improved.
Folio 22: 5 July, decks rather wet, particularly in the hospital, from strong breezes and frequent squalls. Buckly and Gibney, no complaint but debility. Patrick Bryan has had haemorrhoids and an eruption about the anus. Thomas Burns, injurial swelling on the right side and several small dry blotches about the glans penis and prepuce. John McCartney, griping and frequent purging. John Hughes, constipation.
Folio 22: 6 July 1819, Buckly, Gibney and John Campbell all improve a little but still complain of much debility and impaired appetite. George Huston still complains of his throat.
Folio 23: 6 July 1819, Bryan McGrothen [McGroden], headache and constipated bowels. Mrs Wattis, wife of one of the guards, safely delivered of a son. F
Folio 23: 7 July 1819, the hospital continues to be wet from the working of the bowsprit, it is kept dry swabbed and a stove with clear burning coals all day long. Morrison still has difficulty passing urine with pain and straining. Hustons throat is better but complains of great debility. Christopher Gilligan, flatulence and pain in his bowels. William Underwood, sore throat, headache and general pains. John Carr and Hugh Quigley, slight catarrhal symptoms.
Folio 24: 8 July 1819, Jeremiah [John?] Buckly has had vomiting, headache gone. Hinds mouth nearly well, complains of debility and shooting pains in his limbs. John Campbell, old man, headache, languor and debility. Nicholas Hayden, constipation and frequent nausea and vomiting. Thomas Barry has a troublesome eruption. John Carr and John Irvin, slight sore throats. Thomas Burns, mouth gently sore, syphilitic symptoms rather disappearing. Eight of the old and infirm men had preserved meat.
Folio 24: 9 July 1819, the old men in general better, Huston still has purging, throat nearly well. 6 pm, Huston much better, still much debility. William Underwood and Thomas Barry, still costive. Patrick Guines [Guinness] and James Tucker, sore throat. Darby Shanaghans ulcer looking clean and healing. Richard Rochfort, griping and frequent small stools with tenesmus.
Folio 25: 10 July 1819, John Brownly, John Coyle and John Herrick, soreness and pain in the breast. Patrick Connell, pain in his breast and headache. The old men and those who were ill and required it had preserved meat. Huston has had frequent purging and griping returned. James Watts, Guard, severe acute pain in his hypochondrium, with dyspnoea, which he attributes to a fall he had some days previously.
Folio 25: 11 July 1819, Andrew Hinds improving a little, complains of shooting pains in his shoulders and legs particularly along the tibia. The old men who had been complaining and taking medicine are much improved, no medicines required. Owen Dooner, pain in his breast, headache and frequent cough.
Folio 26: 12 July 1819, Martin Connell, headache and general pains in his limbs. [Andrew] Hinds, shooting pains in his limbs, particularly along the spine of the tibia, mouth well, b[owels] regular, appetite good. John Dunn has an uneasy itching all about him. James Quinlin [Quinlan], headache, general pains in his limbs and irregular bowels, with great apparent anxiety of mind. William Organ says he has had a paroxysm of ague which he says he has had annually these 8 years, complains at present with headache, pain in his back and limbs, skin hot, p[ulse] rather quick and full. John Hughes, sore throat.
