Folios 338-340. Letter from Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, forwarding a plan [not included] and certificate [an order is enclosed] of guardians as requested by the letter dated 12 May 1848. Printed order, published 1847, from the Poor Law Commission to the guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, clerk to the justices of petty sessions held within the union, and to others it may concern, concerning alterations to the Workhouse. The contents state that by three Orders dated respectively 6 April 1837, 10 February 1838 and 1 May 1839 the Poor Law Commission ordered the Kidderminster guardians in the counties of Worcester, Stafford and Salop [Shropshire] to build a workhouse for the parishes of the union. By an Order dated 5 October 1842, the Poor Law Commission directed the Workhouse to be altered and enlarged. The Poor Law Commission, pursuant to an Act of William IV, and with consent of a majority of the guardians, now direct that: 1. Within 12 months of date [omitted], the guardians should further alter and enlarge the workhouse to accommodate inmates afflicted with disease. 2. The cost should not exceed the sum of [omitted]. 3. The guardians may borrow the money at a rate of interest not exceeding 5% per annum, secured by a charge on the poor rate of the union parishes. Handwritten statement signed by a majority of the Kidderminster guardians, testifying consent to the altering and enlarging of the workhouse by the above Order to accommodate inmates afflicted with disease. The contents state further that: the cost should not exceed £400, This sum may be borrowed at interest not exceeding £5 per cent per annum and will be secured as in the said Order, and the £400 together with the sum of £7,700 by the 'above recited Orders', make the sum of [£11,700]. This is less than the average annual amount of rates raised in the Union parishes for 3 years ending last Easter. The guardians' signatures are: Abraham Turner, Chairman; Joseph Fletcher, Vice Chairman; RP Turner, William Grosvenor, [Joseph Kiteley], [James Tart], John Potter, Joseph Corbett, Richard Heath, Enoch Baldwin and Leonard Durran. Printed footnote includes the Petty Sessions of Kidderminster Union, which are represented by the following: C Roberts, W B Collis and H Corser, all of Stourbridge [Worcestershire]. A Y Bird and H Saunders [Henry Saunders], both of Kidderminster. Also named are: T S Simkiss [Thomas S Simkiss], District Auditor, and J T Graves [John Thomas Graves], Poor Law Inspector. Paper Number: 14835/1848. Poor Law Union Number 530. Counties: Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
