Description
Content
Folios 332-333. Letter from Thomas S Simkiss, District Auditor, Wolverhampton, [Staffordshire], to the Poor Law Board, referring to his audits of several parishes in the Kidderminster Poor Law Union Workhouse; he states that he has adjourned his audit of the Chaddesley Corbett accounts to give the overseers time to check what portions of rates, if any, remain uncollected, the collector having absconded with about £200. The overseers are aware that the collector was only a private agent. They are prepared to make good the deficiency. Mr Giles, the Collector for the Foreign of Kidderminster, who was reported last audit for irregularity and general inefficiency, has resigned. Henry Knowles, appointed Collector by the guardians of Bewdley, continues to ignore earlier directions. He neglects to pay over the money weekly and his collecting book contains incorrect statements about the date of receipts. He ought to be dismissed if he does not resign. The accounts of the master are kept in a very satisfactory state. Annotation: 'Extract' to Mr Knowles and request his explanation. [Send] copy to the guardians [of Bewdley] for their observations. Paper Number: 14824/1848. Poor Law Union Number 530. Counties: Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
